FireFly MOD

I was originally only going to do the Ship "FireFly" but now I’ve got the FF fever and are thinking of making a full on FF MOD. Correct to the FF universe.

Here’s what I’ve been thinking it could have.

Remember CORRECT to the FireFly universe:

* No shields.
* Only some ships have weps, and pretty basic ones at that. (Maybe three weapon types: Flak Cannon, Machine Guns and Missiles)
* Weapons will have buyable ammo
* Only 1 system (but Huge) like 5 times bigger than the NY system atleast.
* Plannets in the system will be grouped together into "Quadrants" (maybe 3-5 plannets + moons to a quadrant). And each Quadrant will be seperated by vast distaces. This both makes it easyer for people to start of tradeing locally (that dont have cruise) & also validates the "One system verse" to fit in with FF mythology.
* No Nanno Bots/Shield Bats.
* Less ship encounters in outer territories, more in inner worlds.
* Less Gun play and more trade based.
* LARGER planets/suns. (Huge sized plannets)
* Unique scanners/engines for the different ships.
* No trade lanes/Jump gates/jump holes (Free flight only).
* Not all ships would have "Starburst" ie. Cruise
* Only some ships will have thrusters
* All Known FF Planets/Bases/Stations.
* Less Quick fights. (More evasive action/Stronger ship hulls/Less weapon re-fire rate.)
* More personalized ship combat. (No more massive fighter groups of 20 fighters, 5 Max/But heaps Tougher to kill)
* Lots of unsolved conspiracies (ie. Blue Sun corp.)
* Derelict ships/destroyed bases/debris.
* All civilians in the outer territories are scavengers. (They will turn on you to get your cargo)
* Sensor upgrades (Especially sensors, cause i you can see bad guys comming and they can’t see you. You can get away)
* Reps alot Harder to repair.
* Lower Class Pirates may disengage from combat if u kill there leader.
* Reavers (on outer rim territories & that Planet Miranda)
* All Know FF commodities.
* All Know FF fractions.
* Custom Rumors (again blue sun/ earth that was etc.)
* Custom weapon Meshes
* Depleatable Fuel (Maybe) "We are still unsure as to what you will do if you run out of fuel" ATM your fuel will depleat, and it will auto refuel every time u dock.
* Buyable Crew (that when brought will improve your sensors/Armor/Speed)
* Custom Space stations (Niskas Skyplex etc)
* Buyable Deployable Marker bouys. For marking out area's/routes and just for fun.
* Missiles that can be seen when mounted on your ship, and that accually launch when fired.
* Custom HUD & starting location (Depending which fraction you choose to be at start up)
* Most Gun/Cannon type weapons will be fixed in place on the smaller ships, Makeing it a hell of a lot harder to line up a kill shot.
* Manned Turrents on the larger capital ships & bases. (Pilot mesh only)

If Possible

* Custom Main Menu with FF animation in the BG playing the FF theme song. (done)
* VTOL Engines working, with: speed “0” = engines facing down. (not possible)
* Cry Baby. Bought as an expensive commodity and jettisoned to attract near by AI ships. (Not possible)

* Ships *
Ships With the Marked "BETA" Will be in the BETA test release. Before the Main release.

hey really nice idea there ive only seen a small part of the series but i like it, id certainly play it, unfortunately i have no experience modding but i hope it does work out there has to be some other modders that can help, i mean like they better cause this is one of the best thought throu mod ive read about in a long time.

You cannot escape so easily, Dragon. It is not done between us. It will not be done until the end of time.

The mod is finally going well and we are getting stuff done. But we still need more people, i have HEAPS of stuff to do and not eough ppl to do it.

ok, So far I have modeled most of the Ships for the mod, And the MM has been finished and also the codeing for some of the weapons have been done, but i've also had some set backs, mostly ppl not getting back to me and then leaveing the mod team altogether. This is very frustrating...Grrr

So i really need More help with modeling, and or codeing the .ini's

I wish I could help, but I don't know the first thing about coding, I'm a lackluster artist, and I've never even tried modeling.

If you need more mundane things, such as ship and planet descriptions and the like, however... that sort of thing is more in my direction (I'm a writer, you see). I'm not sure how extensive the universe backstory is ATM, though- there should be good info out there, given the fanaticism of most fans. It would take a bit of research, anyway.

I could also inquire around campus, since there's a goodly number of Firefly/Serenity fans around here (maybe one of 'em knows something about the above...). Of course, this is a bunch of college-type folks we're talking about here, so the amount of free time I or anyone I know has can be somewhat questionable. But anyway, that's my little blurb.

IMHO, this really would work well as a mod. There are quite a number of parallels between Firefly and Freelancer, at least from what I know about both thus far. Should translate well.

What im looking for right now is somone to go through the FF series and make a list of every know FF comodity and which plannet they saw it.

Most of the Freelancer cargoes would be perfectly suitable for Firefly...certain things would have to be dropped, and certain things added. A short list from memory of the types of stuff Serenity has "procured" and transported:

- Food Rations (illegally salvaged)
- Medicines (lifted in transit and promptly returned)
- Passengers
- Fugitives (would make the player hostile towards Alliance and Bounty Hunters as long as the fugitives are on board)
- Prototype laser pistol (stolen valuables that would have to be smuggled in small quantities, but worth lots of money)
- Cattle (could be a perishable item)
- Engine Parts (just because of the episode "Out of Gas," in which Serenity gets a replacement part from a would-be vulture)

Could probably come up with a hell of a lot more, but I don't quite have the time just now.

I have a perfect model of Serenity... it isnt skinned... (wasnt made by me, but by a guy i know, would have to give the credit to him)

I also have/had/could find again the plans for a rever ship, and the shuttles that undock from the Firefly.

It would be great if it was a TC and had an RP server... so that people could play as Reavers, or they would be an admin faction.

you would need to make more of the Aliance ships...

I could possibly do some custom HUDs for difrent factions once i find out how to do it, as i am ok at photoshop, here is something i have made just to demonstrate what i can do:



I know thatis not a great example, but wuth a bit of practice i could pull off some decent HUDs... All i need to know is how to import CMPs into photoshop and i will be sorted...

The engine parts thing is a good idea as then difrent bits of your engine could get screwed... (they could wear or get broken while under fire.. im sure there is a way to get the parts to break after a certain length of time,them breaking would slow down the cruise speed)

(you know what is really sad? i was lying in bed thinking this exact thing last night)

EDIT: You could intigrate the realistic economy found on a tutorial here.

EDIT 2385: i found this site... it has a list of planets on it... and a description of each one... it also has a list of some ships

I also found a tutorial to make a "Flak" gun here.

ANOTHER EDIT: to make the scavangers turn on you for cargo, you could make everything contrabanned to them, that way whatever you are carrying the will demand that you drop it, and it you dont they attack and atempt to destroy you.

(I have edited this post several times due to new ideas... may update more as i think)

This is completely awesome that this is getting done. I just got into Freelancer as a way to satisfy my Firefly obsession and would love to help but have no experience modelling.... I will get to the Firefly fan base that I know of and get the word out and hopefully there are some that can help....

Can't wait to see what you come up with.... still waiting to get to level 20 to even get to fly Serenity in your Firefly mod LOL...

Ok, HUD editing is a LOT harder than i thought it would be... may take a bit longer than i thought, but i have worked out how to do it... (i think...)

About getting it to the Firefly Fans, I'm not sure you should do that untill the mod is going therough Beta testing as we dont know how long it will take and people may get dis-interested... (I am a Firefly fan myself... a got a copy of the series after i saw the movie Serenity... and have loved it ever since... shame Fox axed it)

Will keep you posted on my progress with the HUD...

It'd be nice if you fix the reputation system. Of course Reavers would always hate you, but a group of Browncoats might not know your an alliance mole. You were talking about VTOL... did you mean manually landing on planets?
