OK, so how many of you are putting in 12 - 16 hour days this week

"Raises Hand"

Ok, now (I don't know why I feel the need to defend myself)
I May only have a lev 5 Character now. I also may only have reached lev 20 at my peak. But that does not mean that I don't understand how fast one can level up in this game.

I haven't gotten as far in life as I have, and have the ability to afford to provide this to everyone by being a complete moron. I know that even if I could level to 38 in 3 hours, someone else could probably do it in 2 hours.

What I do is I watch people. I learn from others. I even have a side server set where I have some of the best players on my server proving to me how fast leveling can be done. Bet a lot of you never thought about doing something like that to learn more about a game :-)

As for improper bannings. It's gonna happen in a game where people can level up to max so fast. I have to try to keep cheaters down, and without investing a significant portion of my personal life into tracking low lifes. I cannot guarentee that I won't ban wrong. I just do the best job that I can in the 1 hour I spend here and there.

For the people who keep complaigning about my decision to ban based on names I don't like. Heh, that is my choice. One reason is that I have found that those that can't invest the time into coming up with a decent character name, probably aren't looking to invest the time in becoming an upstanding member of my server. Thus, poof, bye bye. Once again, this is my viewpoint, and in stealing a line from one of my favorite movies "Is beyond contestation"

If you don't like it, I will steal another line for you "You are the weakest link, Goodbye"

As for why so many cheaters are attracted to my server. If you honestly believe that it is due to me banning so many people, maybe you should take a differant approach to your thinking. Maybe it is because I am the biggest target right now. Think about it, you see my server, the largest on the net, and you go, hmmm, if I cheat on there more than likely someones in New York that I can harass. Also, some people find an odd thrill in attacking my server because I have made it chear I am against cheating. On the same token, some people stay away from the server because I am so against cheating.

Now as a parting question, How many of you have spent over 2 hours fighting with one cheater who kept taking down your server? I had someone a few nights back that was taking down the server every 5 - 10 minutes. I figured it out and banned him. Well, then he started taking it down almost every minute on the nose. After some time (2 hours), and a little practice, I got the person basically off my server permenantly. Now say that I am a bad admin. This person could have ruined the server for days. Yet I took the time to deal with them. Would you have? How many Servers have been shut down because of people like this? Did I shut mine down?

With a players IP address you have enough information to obtain the abuse e-mail address for his service provider.

You should give me 7MD's IP so I can file a complaint about him and his abuse on the internet..

Yeah, sorry if i complained a lot, but i have the sad experience of starting on servers and then see them get destroyed or ruled by camping cheaters, when that happened on seattle i got a deja-vu...

Keep the great work Gene!

hey gene got a couple of question

is a nomad fighter allowed on your server do you have that turned on ?

also is dueling in mahatten space allowed?

Post Wed Apr 23, 2003 3:16 am

Good one Mr_nStuff...I agree, that screenshot alone is more than enough for a banning. Hey look, that was when I made that remark about him not being good enough to play fair.

Gene: I appreciate all the stuff you're doing to keep it as cheater-free as possible. I just hope the patch will prevent people from heavily altering their ships like that. After a LOT of work, I finally got an Eagle and some really good equipment. With that said, I'm proud to have earned a ship that most players won't be any match for. Sure some could probably still kick my ass...but not many.

The point is, when someone uses cheats and kills me like it was nothing, that pride I felt goes flying out the window! But lets say a legitimate player kills me (outside Liberty that is) fair and square, I would actually be fine with that. It just means they're better than me, and there's no shame in that.

Hey Gene.

I believe I've been playing regularly on your server since its inception, we've had a few occasion to chat. I've been using your server as a completion to the single-player story; I've not yet explored all the sectors, I've still much to learn about the game, and so I'm having one hell of a time.

I understand that, for security, enjoyability and many other reasons, you may be required to do player wipes of characters on the server on a semi-regular basis; I was wondering wether we could find a way to conserve my navigation maps across server wipes. I'm mostly an explorer-type gamer, and I get a kick out of finding out stuff. Although money is'nt exactly an issue, ( I can trade my way back into wealth in a reasonable amount of time), trade-routes, secret (out of patrol route) jumpholes, wreck positions, and general navigational data represents a humongous loss to me, one that cannot be achieved in any other way than a painstakingly meticulous exploration of the various systems. (and a cheat for that, well, that would just drive me out of my entire interest in the game)

If you do intend to do successive player wipes in the future, perhaps I can look into making a few tools for you that may ease the burden on the 'legal' players, and maximize their persistent history. Something that only swipes ships/equipment/cash, but conserves both reputation (iffy) and navigational/trade-route data would be ideal. This is, of course, just an old crank fussing about.

Depth.

I commenced playing on the server this morning, and just after reaching Cambridge (1st part of my trade route) I was disconnected. The thing is, anytime I'm disconnected, I can usually reconnect within minutes...but after 10-15 minutes, it's still not on the list.

I'm only saying this to show my concern that something bad might have happened...but I hope it's a matter of just being down longer than usual. (and maybe it's already back up) I'm sorry that you have to put up with all this crap. I mean you were generous enough to give us a really good server (without those damn cheaters it would probably supprt 100 players like you mentioned before), then people come on with the sole purpose of ruining it.

Anyway, good luck in finding those responsible.

You know, password protecting this server would go a long way in eliminating most the cheaters/modders that take up so much of the administrators time. There's pros and cons to doing that though.

Once you have a customer base, you'll still have plenty of people logging in. I think that is the case by now with this server. If you password protect it, the random cheaters who don't know the password will NOT be able to get in. Keep in mind, the fact that this server holds so many and it shows up as one of the top servers if you sort by player numbers means it's a target. Cheaters/modders go where there's numbers...that's a no brainer. It would do them very little good cheating on a server that hold 4 people. The tempatation is too strong for them to gravitate to server with the more poeple on them.

It should be something to at least consider, even after the patch comes down the pike form Digital Anvil. No one knows if the patch is going to make this administering of FL server that much better. I know it's VERY time consuming to hunt cheaters/modders and the payback is mostly negative. (i.e. why did you ban me, your server sux). Rarely do we hear people say thank you for putting up a server for me to play on. About 10 to 1 sound right Gene_Defect? ;

Oh here's something that was happening to me last night while playing on the server... I would take a mission and when I would complete it I would get the reward minus about 1,000 credits each time. Anyone know what cheat or bug that might be?

Post Wed Apr 23, 2003 6:21 pm

Hi Gene and everyone,

urm... I would like to clarify one thing. Am I banned? Because these few days, whenever I try to connect to the seattle sever, I keep getting the message that the sever is full at the moment. Does this mean I'm banned? This seldom happens 3or4 days ago.

I don't cheat, I didnt take money from cheaters or anyone after the last reset(i didnt know taking money was cheating before sever reset), I don't even use a single mod. My level is around 17 after a few days of playing:thats normal.

My game name is Ezekiel so if you could check it out Gene, thanks.

So does message: sever is full equals banned? Thanks again!

Post Wed Apr 23, 2003 6:24 pm

Server is full does not mean you are banned. That indicates people are camping out on the server...that's all.

Post Wed Apr 23, 2003 6:37 pm

Yeah, I wouldn't password protect the server. Who knows.. Maybe that's why Elite got "hacked" or whatever. Maybe some kid's haxor elite dad jacked up the server because it was passworded..

Oh.. Dunno though.

I wanted to report the player "wardragon" for suspects of money hack cheat, this person kept asking me and my friends weapons and payed large wads of money for them, he gave me 9 million and tried to pk me after that, this person is new on the servers, keeps whining and spamming and doesnt seem to make anything profitable but despite that there seems to be no end for his funds, we cant exactly know how much he has but the admin can, so i would sugest you investigate this guy funding routine...

Tks in advance

Cams is right, that wardragon has promised many people, including myself, large sums of money, but it never really reached the point where there was a payment though. Once I heard that he had a money trainer I stayed clear from any of his offers.

I have a person to report, he is responsible for cheating and hacking the server. I've got evidence of it aswell, I just need someone to host the screenshots.
