NEW info regarding the Elite and E2 servers
I'm posting this simply out of courtesy to everyone who has logged into either the Elite or the E2 server. I'm only going to state facts first, then I'll move into what we admins "think" happened.
FACTS:
1. Sometime around midnight Sunday 4/13/2003, characters started to disappear from the Elite server.
2. The server was taken down manually today to perform routine maintenance to find out what was going on.
3. Nothing concrete could be determined by any of the server tools. Some of these tools are pretty powerful, but not powerful enough to reveal any conclusions.
4. Both servers are going to remain down until the server patch is received from Digital Anvil.
5. We are going to make EVER effort humaly possible to NOT wipe out all the characters this time around. Backups are made of all the characters periodically, we'll trust in those backups!
6. The Elite and E2 server will be back up and running in the future, count on it. But in what capacity is still an unknown.
Now, onto what we "THINK" happened:
1. Somehow there was a breech in the server that was exploited. Possibly the ports, but to be honest, this is just conjecture at this point. We have no proof, but we do have the results staring us in the face.
2. Since it happened to both E2 and Elite we believe these events are related. It is to much of a coincident to be otherwise.
3. Someone out there probably knows exactly what happened, and if they ever decide to come clean with what they did, it would enhance ALL the FL servers, not just these two. Someone is extremely talented and you should put that talent to good use. Taking down a server is not the way to do it.
So this is where we're at folks. One of the best Freelancer servers has been figuratively brought to it's knees. We give up, you (whoever you may be) win! We have tried extremely hard to keep this server clean and available to everyone. Even so, we have seen cheaters and modders on the server and that in itself was wrecking havoc on the stability. There is nothing more we can do to ensure this won't happened again until we are given some help in the form of server monitoring tools. To put the server(s) back up would only invite a repeat performance.
PS - If anyone has any information about what might have happened, we're all ears.
PPS - the [email protected] email address is still alive and well, but replies will be delayed for a couple of weeks. The [email protected] address is alive and well. If anyone gets a conscience and decides to come clean, use that last email for quicker responses. We're willing to keep everything as private as required, what choice do we have?
Again, we're just as frustrated (if not more) and upset about this as you, but we're really left with no options at this point. A good thing has come to a brief close for now. Hopefully, this will be a temporary event, but as it stands right now, a timeframe is not something we can provide.
