NEW info regarding the Elite and E2 servers

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

If anyone has any hard evidence that there are security vulnerabilities, or possible ways to hack into a Windows 2003 server, please do speak up.

If you want to have a cheat free, solid Elite server, now is your chance to help.

Responses always welcome at [email protected].

It's been a week now... I'm sad.

Don't be sad

As soon as I get my hands on the patch (ahem), the server will be back up. Oh, and as a side note, Elite is getting new hardware, and will be slowly upgraded over the next month, and should keep everyone happy.

Hang on everyone...

Ok, this is gonna sound stupid to an extent, but....

A Microsoft Server product, and you're asking about exploit/crash/hack holes? For one, the people who know them aren't sharing.

For two, look at a recent opinion comic:
It shows a prison with many large holes in the walls, multiple prisoners scampering through them. Title? "If Microsoft designed our prisons".

'Nuff said. I'd like to help, but I can't : )

Hellif, thank you for your opinion.

I don't want to turn this thread into a discussion comparing operating systems, but wanted to clarify my thoughts.

The purpose of my post was to find out why specifically there were people thinking that using Windows 2003 as a server was a bad idea. Not to say that Microsoft hasn't had its fair share of security issues with some of their products, in fact all major operating systems (Microsoft or not) have. I'd just rather keep the generic negative comments to a minimum, as they, in my opinion, don't really help us here.

Bottom line, this product runs on Windows, and of the options available, I feel confident that the version I am using is secure. Once again, though, if someone can prove me wrong, I'm all ears (on-line or off).

Now that is over (hopefully we can leave it there), I do have some good news:

Elite will be back on-line starting tonight!

We have made some configuration changes, and want to test them out over the weekend. If all goes well, it should stay on-line for good.

All previous accounts should be there, but if you feel a character is missing, potentially due to some of the issues we encountered earlier, please send me a mail, and I'll look into it.

Thanks
