Asking Everyone in this modding community...

ok well since we arent allowd to basically copyright anything, i think that just as respect for anyone who creates a mod that it be used to their wishes.. we cant copy right anything but i dont see why cant put a little section asking how we would want our mods to be used and that in no way are we copyrighting this material. I mean this is the least we can do for eachother, those of you have have done larger mods well any mods know how much time and effort goes into it. so just asking once again please have respect for eachothers mods and eachothers work andask permission to use their work in your work, microsoft may be able to take away our copyrighting their stuff, but they cant take away our respect for eachother.

Sub:

Sadly people will take what they want and do what they will no matter what you or anyone else says.

Without protection whatever you create is open game for everyone. This has been made more clear in the past couple days then over the past year.

Everyone wants access to everything bar none and they don't feel they need to give credit to anyone.

Nice try SuBXeRo.
The problem in this community is the chaotic posting mods and modded lines.
Say if I download a few others' mods and combine/change them a bit then claim it is ny mod. That just don't help things going. We are here to share our ideas, works and give each other comments. Not to making something "so cool" and others look at the creator as the "most talent" modder. Sure we can put our last name in whatever work we have done, but it doesn't stop these who want to erase them.
StarFyre Studios could have done some truely good job if they didn't step overboard. An organized team put their thoughts together and work toward a common goal is how the first human civilization started. Look back when FL first released and look at us today, we can say that we did a great job. I suggest admin keep an close eye on the forums and maybe control it a bit better, organize it better so we can put our thoughts and works together for something better. I understand there are kids and morons visiting this site and post $@#%, hey, that's what admin for.

well once again this is for those modders that have balls, and what right thing to do. we can only impress upon people to do the right thing and hope only good comes of it. for modders like us, we know to give credit its the only right thing to do.

Microsoft simply did not make this game as good as we wanted. So we try to upgrade it. I would even thank them they made the coding so easy to decipher. Altough it isn't as user friendly as i.e.Medieval TW when modding (here if you make an error, it sends you even a position of it ;D ), even Westwood was silent with those mods I and many others made mods for Emperor, Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun on Dune2k.com. Blizzard even puts a modding device to its games. So why not? Firm is good when it makes good game - but better if we they allow others to improve it!

Can TLR host a Mod Registry? Where specific lines of text is saved in a list?

New and unique works can be registered on this site with credit to the author.

The registry can be either hidden or shown, depending on whether the creator will allow it to be shared. If a new modder takes a shown one, he is to immediately apply a credit statement to his readme. If he doesn't, his mod won't be hosted on TLR.

A registry here. Not the copywrite office, right here. Simple as that.

Who cares if they edit their own mod with your code, lest they want to share it. By having a registry to compare new edits with existing registries, TLR can withhold mods until the new author gives credit to previous authors.

Good idea.

I have a big problem finding the original authors of some works. Because their work was used by A and then taken by B as A's work and then taken by C as B's and so. At least we will have idea who mods what

Any of you who think you can design a system like that which actually works then go for it. It's a lot simpler if you just release things open source and ask that if anyone uses parts of it in their own project to please mention where they got it. Why do it this way? Well for one theres no way you can stop anyone from taking parts anyway copyrighted or not. And the bigger reason is to share with the community and help it grow rather than all the best ideas sitting in 1 or 2 projects because the authors are stingy.

I know better than anyone what its like to have your work 'stolen' and have gotten over that for the above reasons. As soon as you release it then anyone can do whatever they want with it, but that shouldn't matter since you are here to offer something to the community. Not just a mod but your skills and the knowledge you can impart to others. I have seen many game communities wither and die because a few really smart individuals kept everything to themselves, don't let this be the next one ok?

Ya - gotta admit.......do we mod cause we enjoy modding, or do we mod because we have an ego that needs filling and we wish to try and become famous with our own loyal fans?.....................

I know which my choice is, hence why i help others, and have posted what is in my mod up for others to use (if they find an idea they like that is). Hell - in there are ideas that i haven't seen or heard - but i wouldn't try to keep them to myself - why? Cos i really don't care....I just enjoy modding the game, and whilst learning what i can do i happened to start a project. If it wasn't for the project, i would still be fiddling, its just that there wouldn't be any structure to it. I don't require an ego boost, therefore i also expressed my desire to not be in credits. All i ask is that you don't masqerade the ideas as your own and therefore make others ask YOU to use them! Simple!
Its in the mod announcement forum by the way. It might seem a little unorthodox, but then again - how many posts of answers do i do? which most are tutorial size!!.......a relic of teaching i guess

I myself at this point in time, just mod the game instead of playing it. i actually prefer it. i think many others feel the same way. this is away to test our selves with the knowledge we have gained. its to show off our skills, and to give play for others. i feel good that people use my work and that they enjoy it. i dont make mods because its there i make them so it can be used to entertain others and entertain myself by making them. for those of you have made mods, its nice to be in contact with those that have downloaded and played your mod. giving you feed back and errors, its a good feeling to know you have sort of a following. i know allt hsi off subject but what the hell, we need to get away fromt his whole MS problem its over and done with

I think the problem in Freelancer can best be summed up in two basic facts:

1) The game doesn't have any real support for modding so it is very limited in what you can actually change.

2) There are a lot of people out there that misunderstand "mod" and think it means "cheat" & "hack" so you end up with an unusually high number of "modders" who have no intrest in the community.

In my serveral years working on mods for many games I have never seen a community quite like this one. There was allways some degree of "theft" but it was the exception, not the rule and it was a lot easier to spot becuase with so many possibilities, or at least more flexibility, for the mod authers the chances of two independant people coming up with the same solution was highly unlikely. Here this isn't the case, after all when you only have some data file to modify how many different ways are there really to make a ship that wasn't flyable into a ship the players can buy and fly.

I guess the sad thing for me is knowing that it doesn't matter if I have never even played Rebalance, TNG or some of the other big mods out there (or even downloaded them for that matter) It's a good possibility that I'll be accused of "stealing" ideas, if not by the authors then by the players. I think the community as a whole has a bad case of paranoia and a lot of people need to take a little vacation or get laid or something

On the bright side, I've seen some people make some rough entries into the community and then turn out to be decent, helpful members so I'm not completely without hope. Yeah SubXero, that last part is about you
