I haven't personally had any real problems with flaring textures, unless you think that screenshot I posted was a bad flare (I like that effect). I have seen some models that looked bad from certain angles though, both original models and user created ones. I think the big problem with a few of them was the normals (smoothing groups). Anyway the point I was trying to make was too not try so hard to make the texture itself look glossy especially if its causing you problems by distorting details every time you add a layer as you described. But then if I completely misunderstood your post you can just ignore me, I'll go away eventually

No dont do that, dont go away, exchange is useful, it was not intended to be a 'flame' of any description, we all have things to learn, I plan to do a texturing tutorial perhaps we will all benefit, from the exchange of information.
I see a lot of "if only I could texture" and a good model can be ruined by a bad texture job and vice versa... and to my knowledge there is not much on tlr about texturing.

Just a couple of quick questions.
Do you like the new look on basilisk?, I'm a bit undecided, I think a combination of both 'old' and 'new' would be good. leave basically as is but go back to less green trim on the 'wings'. what do you think.?
Also I am just about ready to test it and do some screenshots, I will use the drake, problem is it has only one exhaust/engine, how do you fix that - I dunno the right format, or for that matter the right files and every time I try, I crash freelancer, Can you help... it will make the shots look better.

Hmm, ok now I think you misunderstood me I didn't take it as a flame, I'm too old and senile for that... anyway, good luyck with the tutorial, I wrote one of those for skinning way back when the first Quake was new and some people just don't, won't, or don't want to get it. Another useful tutorial would be one teaching the modelers how to do good UV maps so the artists don't have to

more screen shots coming, and I will add cockpit details, the cockpit glass is clear, so it does not show in the piccys.
btw. the tutorial will be in this column (not this thread) and I will use one of 2 new light fighters, both simple models, for the exersize.... we'll see how it goes... i'm undecided about the format maybe before and afters with an explanation of the steps and making the tex's available - dunno if I can do that through tlr, once I get my file server up (if ever) should be no problem.......... but it would be nice if tlr has that facility.

as for the exhaust nozzles look it up at the shiparc.ini
look for a word nozzle and make it equivalent to two. It will automatically produce two exhaust fires
nozzles = 2, i think if not correct.
As for the texture. you decide now cuz i cannot think of anything else. It will be now in your own hands to texture it. AS they say it's very hard to combine green with other colors. Black is the best i think of. Let me see your final porduct.

Take a look, trim added, cockpit detail added - even an instrument panel - lol, pilots 'seat' (not shown).
I think the gold is a good choice - it compliments both colours and serves to separate them with something lighter - adds to the look - and it will look good in the game.......

Next step, cmp and mat and a fight test........ although the mat will probably be better as .dds based - which I can add.....
