i like the current system...nice and simple...thats what freelancer was all about from the start, a game that was pretty, fun, and had a nice interface that anyone could pick up and use...also, it makes it a little tougher to look for your enemies ...and harder games are more fun..even if people mod them to give themselves 1000000000 hp and 3565987236 damage weapons

You all have no idea just how much stuff was ripped out of the game. And ripped our poorly. When you get a change to download my .cmp importer for milkshape, take a look at all the included equipment models there are for stuff that isn't in the game.

DA was doing great work until Microsoft bought them out and fired Chris Roberts.

you got the right idea parabolix. those pictures start to make fl look like so many others before it -- a "space combat simulator" instead of just a fun game. it's meant to draw more people in, who maybe arent quite so battle hungry or into hi-tech destruction a-la army commercials. a screen like the ones in those pictures would put a lot of people off. fl is simple clean elegant and efficient. i know everyone is all about raging online fragfests these days, but i'm glad this game isn't 'battlefield 1942' in space. now i gotta get back to my FL mod project, "Tree-Hugging Reefer-Hauling Carebears in Space." snoogins.

I'd to say that these radar are not my taste. Micronsoft cut off tons of stuff from the game and they tried to make the game simple. Well I like the FL interface better than the radar one. Though I wish Micronsoft can release a patch that restore all the original models, it wouldn't be impossible to do it ourselves.

Peace doesn't exist between the livings, but the dead.

My point is, they should have at least given an option to turn on complex cockpits or something. Some of us like hardcore space sims, other like FL simple, the way it comes. If they already had the stuff made, why couldnt they just include an options or something instead of just ripping it out of the final release?

Post Tue Aug 05, 2003 3:25 am

probably because leaving in an option to turn that stuff on/off could give one player a slight advantage over another. if you are simply a better flier or shooter, thats one thing. after all, you both have access to the same guns, engines, etc. but, if you are using a more accurate radar screen or targeting reticle than another player, thats not entirely fair. sure, the other player could use them too, but perhaps they dont understand how to use that stuff as well, or they simply wanted a game with less of a learning curve. the way it is now, without that stuff, a contest between two evenly-armed players is much more a test of pure simple skill and less a test of who has more experience with combat simulation games. im not saying i agree or disagree with this -- i can see both sides of the issue. im not even saying this is the only possible reason; there are many others i can think of. just trying to answer your question and maybe give you something to think about. unless it was intended to be rhetorical, but that would be kinda strange...

besides if you want a combat simulator, there are so many others out there to choose from, space or otherwise. freelancer isnt primarily designed to be a battle game anyway, but rather one of commerce. sure its commerce with conflict, but conflict doesnt always have to equal combat. with all the other hardcore frag sims out there, i like to see them trying something new, especially if it attracts a wider audience to the game and the genre. the gaming market is too niche as it is.

Microsoft did a good job. But what in the hell were they thinking? It's like they gutted out an animals testicles but left it to live.

where can i get one of those radars?
....Home Depot

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
and what are you going to put it on? the family car? LOL

looks a lot like an early-pre-alpha test of freelancer, i dont like it tho. its too hard to see if the units are further ahead on the z axis or just higher up on the y axis. i liked the old wing commander ones better: a circle divided into 4 sections. radars like that are partly where "check your 6!" came from; it was around before that but everyone was saying it when those clock-like radars came out. this one is all oval-looking cause its tilted a bit. all things considered i dont like it .

Post Tue Aug 05, 2003 1:12 pm

removed its testicles? please. isnt there someone else out there besides me who isnt full of the testosterone-fuelled, raging desire to kill someone, stomp on their entrails, and do an end zone victory dance while chanting "you've been 0wned?"

there are a million other games in the store devoted to the sole purpose of fragging your neighbor online. and there is no shortage of space combat either, especially with the omnipresent star wars franchise. heck, they've even turned the star trek universe into a frag fest for elite force and ef2. please, PLEASE just let me have this ONE game.

as a software review columnist for a tech magazine, im begging you not to stifle development changes like the ones made to FL. you have no idea how hard it is to write something original about your 746th Doom clone. don't put me on the roof with a shotgun wearing a woman's dress. i dont wanna be that guy and theres only so much weed to keep me sane!

Post Sun Aug 17, 2003 2:05 pm

umm... if i remember correctly... wasn't starlancer a big frag-fest?

...

and isn't this the sequel to starlancer?!?

anyways, i will now tell you a horrible story...or not, i'll just say these few words..:

1)radar
2)X - beyond the frontier

to those of you that played that game... doesn't the mere thought of the radar fill you with uncontainable fear?!?!?!?!?

Post Fri Aug 22, 2003 7:44 pm

You know, it's not even the radar I care about, but I like how it has some form of inside-the-cockpit feel. As it is, the current cockpit view is just boring, with nothing to look at. These screens, on the other hand, have cool little monitors and stuff that can give you info on enemy ships, their hull integrity, etc. I dunno, I just feel that the HUD in Freelancer, while streamlined, simple, and easy to use, is lacking. Perhaps if they just had little options to turn on/off extraneous doodads I would be happy. For example: hull/outside/enemy temperature, a speedometer bar (as opposed to just a number), the enemy's speed, weapon/hull integrity (portrayed as varying shades of green, yellow, and red), and a various buttons that serve no purpose other than to look pretty. In other words, I wish they made it a real cockpit! As it stands, anyone that fights in FL from the viewpoint of the cockpit is at a disadvantage, so maybe those little screens and bits of helpful info and stuff could even it out a bit if you could only see them from inside the ship. I don't know, now I'm just ranting about how things should have been done differently. I'm so ungrateful sometimes.

Thats cool!

Hope it comes in a MOD someday.

The radar looks very close to the original Elite game, it was probably left out so as not to attract any legal wrangles! (Especially as a new version of Elite is going to be released sometime this century).

You can get the wireframe part in the current game.
