So we could have the red and black hyperspace clouds surronding a large system that has jump points separated far apart that act like hyperspace openings. I think the ambient lighting will be enough without having a sun. And the beacons could be named for what jumpgate they lead to so they can be used for setting waypoints. Then we'll just need a way to transport and enter the middle of the hyperspace system without needing a jumpgate point for the big ships.

you can see some screenshots of what i did with the files i got from Deathstryke (many thanks) here .
basically, what i have in mind, is that there will be routes (indicated by nav-bouyies(sp?)), and off that routes will be some radioactive fields to discourage people going off the path... (in B5 it's dangerous after all to leave the routes, you could get swept away by the Hyperspace currents..)

once i get some time off i'm gunna work on those hyperspace beacons.. might take awhile, as i'm in the middle of re-landscaping the backyard.
the only problem i'm having right now is figuring out how to code the jump holes FROM hyperspace so that they don't show up on the system map. (plus the little problem with it saying it's the sigma 13 nebula, but i haven't even begun to tackle the nameresource.dll yet) the purpose of this is to be able to become 'lost' in hyperspace.

well.. i can't see the jumpholes in the hyperspace system...

that was sort of my intention.. you can't really see it.. and the only way to detect it is to come within 500 m.
hence why following hyperspace buoys will be critical

yep, exactly

Good idea.

Someone's posted a shadow ship for downloading on a new thread. I played around with MilkShape but the guy who had the only decent B5 lightwave low ploy models worth importing doesn't want them to be used.
