Infinity: The Quest for Earth - currently in development

Infinity: The Quest for Earth
Infinity is currently in development, no playable version has been released yet but we want to let you know what you can expect from what appears to be a fantastic game.
The official release date is "when it's done". Realistically, expect the first playable version by the end of 2007.

Infinity is a massively multiplayer online game set in a futuristic persistent universe. Players can discover a huge galaxy with billions of planets and can explore, combat, trade, socialize.. the possibilities are endless!

Infinity is an open-ended game in which you control a spaceship throughout the entire galaxy, trying to make a name for yourself. You connect to an online server on which thousands of people are playing, 24/7. The game does not stop when you log off but continues to evolve, it is a persistent universe. The game mechanics do not emphasize any particular gameplay style. Combat, trade, exploration, social relationships.. you are free to choose your own carrier path and goals. The only limit is your own imagination!

Infinity is not a traditional role playing game. Although all players are expected to act in concordance with their avatar's motivations, there are no classes or skills to restrict your choices. Combat between spaceships is in true real-time, and the outcome is determined by your own intelligence and reflexes. Forget turn-based action and experience the great excitement of a first person experience!

Using procedural techniques, the game universe has been designed to be huge and realistic. There are billions of solar systems and planets, each unique and awaiting to be discovered by a player... maybe you? Coherent scales and distances are used, orbits of celestial bodies are correctly modeled and change continuously, allowing you to attend a sunrise on the moon of a giant planet for instance.

Open ended gameplay: unlike many other games, Infinity does not force you to play in any specific way. The game is race-less, class-less and skill-less. You can play as a merchant, trade, mine asteroids or minerals on planets, explore the galaxy, do scientific research, create your own industrial corporation.. or, if you are more into action, play as a space pirate.. at your own risk.

Real-time fighting: most MMORPGs today use a turn-based approach to combat. In Infinity, you are directly controlling your spaceship movements and lasers. Your own skills and dexterity will make the difference, not a bunch of stats on your character!

Persistent universe: infinity is a massively, multiplayer online game. The universe is persistent. When you are not playing online, the game does not stop. Other players continue to play, the universe evolves, and new things are always happening.

Procedural universe: procedural programming is a technique to let the computer generate the game universe on-the-fly, in real-time on request, rather than manually building everything. Because of this, the generated universe can be absolutely huge. In Infinity, billions of worlds, most of them never explored by any player, are awaiting the adventurous soul.

Seamless engine: Infinity's engine features a completely seamless experience. You can fly in space and land on planets.. without any loading times or unnatural transitions.

Planet landing: you are not restricted as to where you can land. Explore every square centimeter of your home planet! On planets you can see the flora and fauna, find oceans, hills, mountains, cities, and a lot of other details.

Unique quests: Infinity offers a wide range of missions available in space stations or cities. But sometimes you might want to try something more challenging. Discover the storyline's quests. Unlike missions, quests follow a real story, and can only be accomplished by one player (or a group of players). Once the quest is done, it disappears forever from the game and is no longer available to other players. Be the first to complete a quest, and you'll get fame, money... and much more.

Newtonian physics: rigid body physics are used to simulate the game objects. However, the newtonian space flight will be controlled by a computer, which will simplify the navigation. The amount of inertia is automatically adjusted. It will be very easy to travel in space, land on a planet, or dock to a station in manual mode.

Astrophysics: Unlike most other games, Infinity respects the relative scales and distances one could find in space. Realistic orbits are used, and planets move in real-time. Many systems have multiple suns, with a complete hierarchy of celestial bodies orbiting around each other. You will find moons and asteroids in orbit of larger planets, themselves orbiting the sun(s).

With that much stuff = work going into it, yousa can bet your asteroid you'll need to get your wallet out every month, so they can sponge their budget on you...

I won't be a sponge or a carpet for that matter... and yes it does look awsome indeed, nicely done. Sorry for my pay to play allergy can't help it.

Furthermore: Servers dont get paid by themselves you know..

Hey everyone don't forget about the Infinity Combat Prototype! It's a workable multiplayer pre-pre-pre alpha (if you can even call it that). It's main purpose is just to test the networking code and combat engine, and even though it's just a simple team vs team deathmatch set in a skybox, it's still a lot of fun!

There are multiple servers up, but I believe the two most commonly used are the US and the UK servers. Every Saturday and Sunday at 21:00 GMT, there is an ICP Brawl. The numbers have reached the dozens (thats a good amount) in certain games. Be careful though, there are a lot of great pilots in there.

There won't be anymore updates on the ICP, so what they have is all there will be until the beta comes out.....but it's still a great amount of fun!

Check it out on the main Infinity website, or look around the forums for more info =)
