Regretfully, Freelancer and VISTA have problems working together. There isn't a work around yet for it.

I'm sorry, but I had been playing it since February, and I re-installed it, and then I re-installed it again and now it won't work. Also, I've heard that Vista isn't compatible with any and all online multi versions. Is this true?

I heard someone was able to get FL running with the multiplayer aswell by shuting down every non essential system such as antivirus software, firewall programs etc etc etc. but ill point out now ive been drinking and my information may not be entirely accurate XD san miguel FTW!

I was presented with a very similar problem by an acquaintance recently, and after several hours of faffing with Vista, I got it to work by, as the above indicates, turning almost all of Schmista's "security" features off, and basically having the machine run with no protection - so I disconnected the machine from the interweb, so online mp-gaming was impossible (but would anyone with even half a brain play online with no anti-virus or firewall?) Even then it was flakey and dumped out, then wouldn't work again.

So I advised my friend to give up with Vista and go back to XP, which of course works quite well, and doesn't require one to close essential protection down.

The creators of Vista were schmucks with no "hind sight" .
They want us to give up Freelancer.

i have found after loading vista on my laptop that freelancer works OK but vista has problems with the mod manager is anyone working on this problem ie. the mod manager team? because in am a freelancer nut lol that would get rid of vista befor i would give up freelancer lol. ghost

run mod manager in compatability mode and select to run it with administrator rights and everythings fine

Taw, if you're so contemptuous of Vista's security features then why are you so concerned about your security when you turned them off?

BTW, I've shut off every security system except automatic updating which is currently "Not Automatic". Hee. It helps to have a hardware firewall but I've never had any malware problems. Ever.

the reason that I'm so contemptuous is that for the most part, these security features hinder rather than help the user, but they're so deeply integrated into Vista that unless you're very careful, turning them off can render the o/s even more unuseable. And if you do turn them off, UAC, DEP, etc, then what you're left with is basically XP +SP2 - so what was the point of it all?

how can you be sure of that, TET? I still get the odd bit of spyware sneaking through via dodgy websites, although very little and it gets quashed weekly if not daily. Even so, I'm so paranoid about malware, trojans, spyware and viruses that I use a variety of means, multi-tiered, to protect myself. A hardware firewall will not do much to protect you against most of those threats (Vista's only real strength is that it's very difficult for a non-admin user to do anything untoward, but this causes problems with legitimate programs as well.) To say that you've never had problems is tempting fate! I said that once and within a day I got my first (and so far only) virus infection.

Vista's attempts to protect users against outside threats and their own errors and foolishness is laudable but misplaced and porrly executed. You're still far better off with XP +SP2 and a decent anti-virus/anti-spyware suite and a proper s'ware firewall (if it's got Norton or Symantec in the name though, forget it!) and a hardware firewall too although that's not absolutely necessary. Sadly M$ decided not to include many 3rd parties in the Vista development process, which in retrospect most observers think was a hefty mistake.

There'll be a service pack early next year apparently which should resolve many of Vista's numerous issues - maybe by the time it gets to SP2 I'll start taking an interest, but I doubt it. Vista is shaping up to be a horror of WinME proportions (so much so that many users have demanded that the manufacturers lean on M$ to keep supplying XP, because it works.) However once XP SP3 is released next year, the end of XP will be in sight - which I imagine will push more people than ever to stable Linux distros such as Ubuntu.

Hopefully by then, I will be a Mac convert and will have one up and running. I will of course keep the vista machine until I can set up a modem/or get DSL for internet conection, but the desktop will be gone then, and once I get comfortable with apple, I will sell the vista machine. Which, if the buyer so desires, it can be restored to XP Media addition.

Well, Taw, I don't usually visit dodgy websites if I can help it. I also have just about every security plugin ever developed for Firefox.

Whenever I run a virus scan from some AV software - usually acquired through parents/friends etc. - it always turns up empty on all fronts. It's actually rather disappointing and the main reason I don't plan to fork over any money at all for a proper AV system - even though most of the freebies don't work on Vista x64. Oh well...
