i think your problem here is the shared onboard video which is bottlenecking your memory bandwith. XP is a memory hog anyway and on laptops being used as gaming machines, even games which are supposedely within spec will often struggle.

you could go into the BIOS and see if you can increase the amount of RAM available for use as video-memory, the default is 16mb iirc for Latitude c610s which is appallingly low (hence why FL won't co-operate) you need to get that up to 128mb, also if possible set the AGP aperture to 64mb, FL like many other games seems to hate any other setting for that feature.

your cpu is ok but not brilliant for FL, although the P-III mobility is an excellent processor by any standards, I use two of them in my server because the cores are so good. You might also think about upgrading your overall RAM to 1gb if poss. I don't remember if you can use generic SO-DIMM or whether you have to use Dell's own.

Recommended is Dell's own PC133 SDRAM memory module.

*recommended* means in reality you can use cheaper memory, they just want your money; in the past, you often could only fit manufacturers own modules because the slots were in different positions. Thus you'd have to pay firms like IBM or Compaq $300 for a piece of RAM (oh yes)

dual-channel 400mhz works really well with the P4s dont it! how do you find the heat dispersal with just a stock cooler on the Prescott though?

Welp, as I stated so long ago I upgraded. I now have:

Athlon64 3700+
1 gig DDR (G.Skill Dual Channel kit, 2-3-3-6)
200 gig + 250 gig HDs
Asus A8N-E board
DVD drive, DVD-writer drive, and so on.

The other thing that's new is the heavy-duty Enermax power supply.

One thing I found is that you have to be careful about how tight the screws are. I had to back the screws off a quarter turn to get the motherboard to boot (I think having them too tight was making the bottom of the board touch the case slightly, which shorts some components. Luckily the power supply has an short circuit protector).

open the control panel, go to System, click the hardware tab and you can view all your hardware specs with the Device Manager

I had a verysimilar problem when I upgraded my system from a 1.1GHz celeron and associated mobo to a 2.5GHz with a new mobo. The thing wouldn't even post. Turned out that XP doesn't like to change chipsets so i ended up wiping it off my hard drive (I have all my important data on my second hd for storage) and reinstalling XP. No problem since. Don't know if this might help or not and before trying Back Up Anything You Want To Keep.

I'm having trouble with in-game sound on my new system. My old system had no sound issues at all.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen, and if they had found a fix for it.

My old system was:

Using on-board sound
WinXP Pro w/SP2

Both systems were set up with DX 9.

The sound cuts out on this new system. Mostly the dialog portion, but also the opening scenes in the single player game, and most of the video footage sound as well. The mission statements when you first leave base won't play most of the time, and the police scan speech, or any of the pop-up stuff when in space.

I'm going to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM, as soon as I go with a 64 bit OS. Already have it sitting on a shelf waiting.

I'm just starting to build an Intel system, based on the Pentium D 805, on an ASUS MB, so I'll probably try out FL on it too.
