Idea for Storywriter and Modder''s

Read, add and comment on excellent written stories by fans, set within the Freelancer universe

I don't, but your idea is a great one Athena. You should follow it up. Perhaps if you were to make it so that the coalition wanted peace, but since the Alliance has considered them the enemy for the last 800 years, there would be considerable misunderstanding.

Athena,

I was looking at doing something like that with mine. Obviously most people who have read mine know that the coalition has sent a ship. Unf. my stumbling block is making everything that surrounds that true to the Freelancer world that DA created.

I can say it is very difficult and i have changed my mind many times and to be honest i still haven't got the backstory even figured in my head yet.

Bret, that's where I am on this.

It's relatively straightforwards writing the story of the event, how the ship jumps to Sirius. The hardest part surely comes from any interaction between Coalition people and Sirius (Alliance) people.

I would say, judging by the way the Coalition people wanted to exterminate their enemies, it gives some insight to how that society is founded. I think "Cylon", when I think Coalition.

There's certainly no clear lines of attitude between the two major factions. If anything, the majority of Sirius inhabitants would have forgotten about their heritage and ancestry.

Would the Coalition speak the same language after generations? Are they even more militaristic and territorial than before? Have they expanded their 'empire' to include other systems? 'Chronicles of Riddick' springs to mind now (that and Vin Diesel looks hot). Perhaps the Coalition no longer exists other than in name. Instead it's ruled by a life-extended cyborg hungry for power and energy and life and wealth and, and.. All the usual things power hungry baddies yearn for.

I doubt it's anything like civil liberties and low taxes.

As Code would no doubt agree, I often go on these rambling idea-fests. I dub them officially, "Athenabubbles". haha

(Bret, your story was an inspiration for me. You should consider pursuing this for my own selfish requirements )

You know, I've never really thought that the whole "Return of the Coalition" plotline was all that plausible myself. If there's one thing that history has shown, time and again it's that dominant nations stagnate and fragment. It seems more likely to me that the Coalition, after defeating the Alliance, would first begin to decline.

They'd have no enemies to fight (unless the Nomads do, in fact, show up) and no reason to continue to excel. They'd rest on their laurels for a bit. The military impetus for scientific progress (which has historically been one of the strongest) would be gone, so it's unlikely that there would be a whole lot of breakthroughs.

Then people's egos and ambitions would start to flare up. Underlings would clash with the rulers. Mutinies, secessions, revolutions would all threaten to tear the fabric of the Coalition asunder. And, most likely, they would. I mean, look at Sirius. Originally everyone who arrived was on the same side. Now everyone is somebody's mortal enemy. There's no reason at all to believe that the Coalition would somehow be immune to that same sort of thing.

Another issue is that of "why?" What would prompt the Coalition to go to Sirius in the first place? They won the war. For all they know, the Alliance is completely destroyed. The sleeper ships may never have made it. And the war was some 800 years previous as well. The Sirians have made their home in, um, Sirius; what reason would the Coalition have to attempt to pursue another war against a vanquished foe who no longer seems to bear any resentment or desire for vengeance? Militarily, the risk is enormous. I suppose it's possible that the Coalition might have become a massive empire in the intervening time but, for the reasons outlined above, I find that prospect unlikely.

As I see it, the Coalition will likely not be some superpowered uber-faction or anything like that. More likely they'll be stuck in the past and fighting amongst each other as humans are wont to do. They probably won't even be on par with Sirius as far as technological development goes; necessity is the mother of invention, and the Coalition has no need to innovate without hardships or enemies.

Just my opinions on the issue.

I gotta agree with Code here.

It might make a good story, but I really don't think the Coalition is going to hold an 800 year-old grudge against the Alliance after whoopin' their tails.

But that's just me.

HELLOO! Did no one read my last post? I think the Coalition would want peace, but the Aliance would be the ones with the grudge. After all, the last 800 years the Sirius system's people have considered the Coalition the enemy.
