CYO Fanfic RPG: SignUp & OOC Discussion
Read, add and comment on excellent written stories by fans, set within the Freelancer universe
If it were up to me I'd let you join up. The game had already been running for a few days when Hahukum Konn jumped in too and that wasn't a problem, so I guess the precedent has been set. Just make sure you at least skim over Athena's fic (pay close attention to the last bit as it's most directly connected with our story) and give the IC game posts good close reads.

Well, soon as I read through 4 pages of long (but VERY good!) posts, I'll start making a character Rp and try and fit in, If I still feel up to it

Name:Juan Ramirez
Age:27
Faction:Corsair
Appearance: 6'2 feet tall, muscular build. Black hair and short beard.
Occupation: Pirate
Ship:Titan
Bio:Juan was born in Cadiz Base of Omega-5 system. His father, a Corsair fighter pilot didn't want him to get hurt as the Omega-5 system was (and still is) practically a warzone between Corsairs and Red Hessians, decided to send Juan to Crete to his grandfather, who was a former fighter pilot who had retired after sustaining foot injuries when his Titan was attacked by a group of bounty hunters.
Juan grew up mostly in Crete with his grandparents, even though his parents visited him as often as they could. Juan's grandfather told him stories about fighters, pirates, smugglers and space in general. Juan often hanged around in the landing areas, watching fighters and other ships as they took off and landed. He read everything about fighters he could get his hands on, and trained flying in simulators. Finally, when he was 18, he volunteered to be a fighter pilot, and was accepted.
He soon scored his first Bounty Hunter kill, and quickly gained reputation as a cool-headed and skilled pilot. Even though his father was concerned that a pilot career could mean death, he was still proud of his son. It was in his blood. Ramirezs had been fighter pilots ever since the first Corsairs started piracy. Now Juan was going to continue that tradition. When Juan was 21, he was sent to Cadiz Base, and met his father there.
Years went on and Juan's reputation raised along with the kill scores, and at the age of 23 he was given the command of a flight of four Titans. When Juan was 25, his life changed. While his father had been returning from a raid to Omega 3 system, he was ambushed and killed by Red Hessians. Juan wowed to avenge the death of his father, and left Cadiz in search for his father's killer. He eventually tracked the killer down to Luxury Liner Hawaii. Soon the Hessian was found dead in his room, brutally beaten up to death.
Now, Juan Ramirez is a feared pirate and is also wanted by governments of Rheinland and Bretonia for piracy and dozens of murders. He is known as a cunning and ruthless pirate, who howewer is extremely loyal to his friends, but those who betray him will often suffer a painful and long death. There are two things that Juan hates more than anything else:Red Hessians and Bounty Hunters.

First, welcome. Enjoy the game.
Second, and this one's more important, you have to take special care to remember that the game takes place after Athena's fic. This means the Corsairs aren't in good shape. We are given the impression that Kenji and his group have been fairly successful in their attempts to destroy the Corsairs. This shouldn't dissuade you from taking on the character you have chosen though. In fact it can make things very interesting in that your guy could be trying, amongst all the chaos, to rebuild the Corsairs to their former glory with him as the new head. Or something like that. Essentially you just have to remember that the Corsairs aren't quite the force they once were. What you choose to do with that is your business.

Code is right. Kenji waged a series of raids on Corsair bases, outposts and even semi-penetrated their home systems, though weren't able to move much farther than the jump hole to Omi Theta.
That doesn't mean Corsairs don't exist, and it might make any surviving Corsairs very driven, focused and tough individuals indeed

Hello folks. I have been watching this for a while, and I think that I might join in for a bit. I just started spring break, and I am going to be having a lot of free time, so I think that this could be a fun way to spend a bit of time.

Jake Edwards was once one of the most famous and well-liked men in Sirius. He was very high up in the Liberty government, serving as close advisor to a president, as well as being Liberty's chief diplomat to Bretonia. He graduated from West Point Academy in the same class as John Mason. He trained extensively in diplomacy and commando-style fighting after West Point, and went into the Liberty government as a diplomat. He was a close friend of John Mason for a decade, but Mason betrayed him while Jake was away in Bretonia. Jake was forced to flee, and his whereabouts are still unknown.

Okays. I have a bit of an issue with the big development in LX's new post. I'm not entirely sure the cloak is in keeping with the overall ethos of the game as described by Athena.
That's the paradigm we've been working with so far. I know it's been stretched and warped a bit here and there - by myself no less - but the move towards cloaks is, I fear, a dangerous one. The possibilities for misuse are legion and, while I don't think any of my fellow players would stoop to abusing the technology, it can be hard not to "take the easy way out" sometimes. I would strongly advise against the introduction of cloaks into the game.
Of course, this isn't my game to arbitrate and I can't outlaw anything myself. All I can do is make suggestions. That said, I think the cloak, if it does stay, is still too powerful. I appreciate the attempt to balance it by knocking out the shields when it's in use, but I don't think that's enough. The weapons really should go as well. If the ship can shoot while cloaked, whoever possesses that technology will have an unbelievable advantage over one who doesn't. At the very least we have to make it an all or nothing proposition. No shooting and no shields while cloaked will mean the the decision to run silent will not be one made easily. Anything less is - imo - a god-mod.
I suppose the manner of the balance is also somewhat questionable. How hard would it be for someone to get the cloaking device and then "mount an oversized power generator" or something along those lines? This concern is, essentially, that if we do allow this to go through, it will open the door for us to start moving far and away from the Freelancer universe. If that becomes the case, the RPG will lose much, if not all of its current allure. That is something I would hate to see happen.
To sum up: I don't think the cloak is a good idea. I can't forbid it myself, but I do worry that it will be either abused, or will be the first step down a path which will lead us away from a Freelancer-ish feel to the game. As such, my own personal preference would be to see it disallowed. If it is not, I would insist that it incur a greater cost in terms of combat performance, ie. reduce it to zero. This, however, might only serve to postpone any issues, rather than facing them head on. I leave the final judgment to Athena, though.
The universe and backdrop will be the 'vanilla' Freelancer universe.
No mods, custom ships or technology other than what's available in the original Freelancer are permitted.
