I will. And I don't have a problem with locking systems as long as it doesn't interfere with conducting business as usual. I would say that once the turns are posted it's fair game. Go wild(e).

Post Mon Dec 27, 2004 1:20 pm

That's actually what Liberty and Bretonia did to ME last game when I controlled RHineland--march all forces into my systems before I had my turn for the day.

I'll use the realistic argument again--you can't really complain about an attack, we've been (IC) at each other's throats all week

It's not so much about locking jumpgates as that the battle for a system takes place only between a set amount of forces--that which the attacker moves into the system and/or has had stationed there and those the defender has already stationed in the system. That's the battle. The locking jumpgates thing is quite generally about keeping those boundaries. Because the battle wouldn't really be that long a thing. A few explosions and its over, so there wouldn't be time for huge fleets to reinforce the forces in a system.

Hell no, I'm not complaining. I'm just saying the system needs to be re-worked. And I'm truly sorry that you got shafted last time around. If I had known at the time I would have gladly jumped in and lambasted anyone who did it to you.

And another problem with the realistic argument: it doesn't take actual real life into consideration. People will have school to worry about starting next week. They won't be able to stay up all night or spend all morning working on their turns. If we don't change the system the winners will be those with the most free-time on their hands. How is that fair?

Umm...Deathspike may have some objections to that. He's active.

@ jacob: Am I an Ace now? or still a veteran?

Post Mon Dec 27, 2004 6:04 pm

OOC: Well then if DeathSpike decides that he doesn't want me in his space I will relinquish control of Shinagawa. But he had better have a good reason for me to not take over an NPC base....

Transmission to Liberty: Stay out of the Rheinland and there will be no problem.

Transmission to the DSE: Your tribute is accepted.

Building: I'm cancelling that last HF order and building instead an additional VHF wing.

Post Mon Dec 27, 2004 9:03 pm

Dammit, where's Jacob? I need to b*tch about the battle system!

And Capt. Kill, I paid half the tribute this turn, you only need to pay your half. Maybe you, rich and I can come to some sort of agreement about the future payments. Contact me via e-mail if you're interested. If there's one thing Rheinland has plenty of it's credits. My resource situation ain't so rosy though.

Post Mon Dec 27, 2004 9:04 pm

Transmission to Liberty: We have no argument with you. Up until recently, no Liberty official or warrior had even heard of the Red Hessians. We have never had a cause for battle with you, other than your alliance with Rhineland. Why should you be upset over Rhineland's retribution? How is it relevant to you? As Triyun said, stay out of Rhineland and there will be no problem.

OOC @ Codename: Until Jacob shows up you could always reply to my post on Triyun's fanfic...*nudge nudge*

Could you summarize for me what is the issue, perhaps I could be of some assistance.

Post Mon Dec 27, 2004 9:24 pm

Wilde, I'll handle it. You fill in anything I miss, OK?

The problem is that the battle system as it currently stands is flawed. It prevents people from even carrying out their basic beginning of turn actions if a player posts a battle in one of their systems before the other person has posted his turn. Take me for example. Because Wilde attacked me in those various systems I was denied the ability to make moves I had planned all along. I had a feeling Wilde was going to give up on Dresden and go for some sort of all out assault (because of what happened last turn) and figured I'd reinforce my position accordingly. Unfortunately for me Wilde posted his turn first effectively preventing me from carrying out actions I had planned yesterday. "Tough cookies" you might say but in this case I'd have to disagree. It underscores a fundamental error in the system. While we all have a certain amount of free time now, I expect it will begin to diminish next week. Then we will find ourselves in a situation where the people who win the game are those who happen to have the most spare time on their hands. They will be able to post their turns first, lock people up in their own systems and generally cause havoc amongst the rest of the players by "spoofing" (that's the term I'll use for launching a tiny attack with the sole purpose of locking a system down). We have to change the rules so all players are on even footing regardless of their RL commitments. Otherwise it isn't really a fair system.

There are two ways we can change the rules. One is to say that once battle is declared no movements may be made except those made at the start of a turn. In other words, make it that even though Wilde attacked me I'm still allowed to place and move as if the systems were all open. The other choice is to institute a rule that prohibits battles from being declared until both parties have posted their primary turn information. What we can't do is leave the rules as is.

And WTF are we supposed to do if this doesn't get resolved? Pretend it never happened? Continue in this state of limbo? I need answers fer chrissakes!

One idea is that when a battle is declared, the system isn't locked down and you decide what ships you send to defend against the attack. Then you wait for the random number to come. After all, it would be VERY unrealistic if EVERYTHING stopped because a few fighters came into a system and picked a fight. And I agree, the attack system is REALLY flawed (no offense Jacob) and needs fixing IMMEDIATELY.
