FanFic feedback thread

Ok, where to begin. The writing seems to have dropped to nothing, beyond the RPG threads, and if you will forgive me, is not quite the same as writing/fanfic. There have been a few good pieces written here. But, on the whole, interest has dropped off. I take into account time from school, college, and work can interfere. But, what I want to do in this thread is encourage those that like to write, to not give up. To pursue your interest with passion. Yes, that may be less than a handful of people, but, I would like to see that handful continue. If not in Fan Fic area then in general writing. There is another forum for stories other than FanFic. Read a few posted there and see if that is an area that you would like to venture.

What I would like to do, is encourage you to work on your topic choices. 1st and foremost, choose a topic you like and have an interest in. That makes the story an easier fit. It has been said, write what you know. That you be familiar with your subject. It is hard to write about a topic, that you are unfamiliar with.
2nd. Get a tool, wether MS Word, WordPerfect, MS Works, or another word processor. There is a link to a free one in the sticky on this page. Use it to compose your stories, wether you think them through, or write on the fly. This will give you a chance to reread them, edit them for spelling, grammar , etc. Then, reread them again. Does it sound like something you would read in a book? Does it interest you? Does it make you think the story in your mind? If it does not, in may not hold the interest of another reader.
3rd. Feedback is important, but not the highest judge of your work. Everyone likes it when people say, “Nice story” or “Keep it coming”. If the story is badly written, it will only continue that way. You have to judge your work first, if it passes muster with you, then seek some feed back. But, take it with a grain of salt. Some may just not like your style. The work may be well written, just not for that persons taste. What then is the best answer? Look at all the feed back and get a general idea of the review of the story. After all, even the best authors have had bad stories to come out. But, when they write a great one, look out!

Just write, if it is what you truly like to do. I wish I knew who said this, but I don’t, so here goes. “If one day you wake up and all you can think about is writing, then you are a writer. Put pen to paper, or in this case, keyboard to processor and write a prize winning story.

No, I am not an expert at writing, I am just one who loves to write. Want to know what I have written, loon on the home page for the fanfic area and click, see the one written by me, Michael Turner or better, go to the other story forum and see what is there. Use the from last year option to see all the posts.

Enjoy writing.

Michael Turner “Finalday”

Post here if you are interested and what your writing interest are. Come up with ideas to write about. I will do my best to encourage you.

I would have to agree with FD, FanFic writing has dropped recently. Sure, Neuromancer coming back was a big boost, but it has worn down now. I am still writing, but in between homework, chores, sports, and judging the CYOF RPG, I have less and less time to write. I love reading the stories of others, and I sure hope to keep reading them, so here I am, encouraging you not to quit. Find some time, and write a story. it doesn't have to be the best, but it is fun, and good for your brain. (Increases test scores! ) I know there is a community of writers here, and they must have all gone on vacation or something, but we need more stories, so get your lazy butts back in those computer chairs, and start writing! ()
Also, new writers can get tips from the sticky at the top of the page.
Happy Writing!

My last update was 3 days ago. I'm trying to write as fast as I can but I don't want to rush anything!

Promise to have something up by today

ttfn

Ps: Final, thanks for taking such an interest in our fanfics
Pps: When will we see a continuation of your story? Valerie might meet Tanya one day, with your permission

As has been said before Fd, your support for the writing community here is great.

My story, while chugging along very slowly, is not dead. San Andreas is amazing and i've been putting many hours in to it and i did lose enthusiasm for my sequel as i did not love writing it. I will find my deep enthusiasm for it once i beat San Andreas, but until then it will be slow from me.

I am also one the wants to be the best at what i do so if i'm stuck for ideas i won't rush in a put something terrible. I like to keep you all guessing as to what will happen next. Although it may not seem it, not wanting my sequel to suck, this is taking me a lot longer to do than SOS which itself took me over 30 hours of writing on word and many hours putting down ideas on paper.

The Roslin Protocol is also not dead. I just have too many other things going on. And writers block. Damn.

One thing to consider when it comes to my writings is that they are very, very, long. To put it in perspective, neuro's old story is something like 37 pages; mine is over thirty so far. Then again, Athena’s whopping 53 pages puts us all to shame.

I've often been told I can write well, but my only problem is I need something to inspire me. Otherwise, it'll just follow near the same plot as some of my favorites.

Aravis
As far as needing inspiration, look at things arund you, listen to music. there are a lot of things that can inspire you to write. I created a short story, World War:TLR - The Apocalypse that I got the idea to write, on the way home from work. By the time I got home, I had most of the plot layed out, all I had to do was write it down. Different things can be inspiration. It mainly depends on the story types you like to write. On type only, will limit you. Also, consider, 1st person and 3rd person stories as well.

To throw in my two credits' worth:

Writing a good quality fanfic takes time. I only wish I could write a good story on the fly and post a new chapter every hour. But alas, 'tis not meant to be. Having said that, I would definitely encourage anyone, good writer or not, to give it a go. Writing ability, although important to a good fanfic, takes a back seat to a great story. There's a lot of people here willing to read and help you out.

As for all the great fanfics currently in production, please, for the love of God, keep them coming! There is an amazing amount of talent here and it would be a shame for all of it to go to waste.

Okay, that was a little more than two credits, but hey---it's fanfic we're talking about.

Mmmm...Synth Paste...

Some fanfic ideas, take an planet/system and create a "local" story. Use one of the game people and build around it. That way, you don't need the whole freelancer universe to have a good story. Like leeds with Tobias, or, Pitsburg with king. The possiblities are endless. I hope to get the other half of my story up soon. It needs a conclusion, and I hope to make it a good one.

For those with "Writers block" Decide on what your writting, and think of the music that would play best with it if it was a movie. Play that in the background while writting, it can modivate you. For TLR Wars, i use star wars music and it makes putting it down a lot easyer.

In my case, I had it easy. I just borrowed a "hook" that someone else had inadvertently (or not ) created in his story and jumped off from there. I usually use a text editor like notepad to do basic story writing and then jazz it up in an HTML editor for posting to my website, since I know where I want to add italics, bold, horizontal lines and whatnot.

Don't be afraid to post any story that you have written. When I first started writing and posting Ragnarok, I thought I was a terrible writer and I was very nervous about what people would think. But now I the main worry that I have is goofing up somewhere while typing the chapter.

I agree with the others, you should go slow when you are writing, and take the time to think about what you are writing Doing this leans for making a better written story.

I'm stuck on Rheinland's Redemption, for a number of reasons - one of the big ones is how to write a tense space battle involving a combined total of somewhere around 600 ships.

So, I humbly request absolution and shall commence to try and finish the fic this year.
