And since I have nothing better to do, let me show you ARILIAS'S GUIDE TO MILITARY SPACE SHIPS
For your convience, each category of ship has been supplied with an example from the Star Wars movies (only the original trilogy, mind you)
COMMAND SHIP
General Class: Capital Ship
Example: Super Star Destroyer
These things are the biggest ships in any Navy. They are rare and difficult to produce, so only the largest fleets will have one. Fleets with two of these will be incredibly rare, and only the fleet directly under the command of the Navy's commander-in-chief stands even a chance of having three (a slim chance, at that). Generally speaking, they're enormous moving space stations that you don't get to command unless you're an Admiral. If there's one in the fleet, you can bet your life that it's the flagship.
BATTLESHIP
General Class: Capital Ship
Example: Imperial Star Destroyer
These are the backbones of any Navy. Unlike the extrodinarily rare command ships, it's pretty much guaranteed a fleet will have at least ONE of these behemoths. Small, patrol fleets will usually have two or three, with the big assault groups sporting eight or ten. The largest fleets are likely to have around 20.
CRUISER
General Class: Capital Ship
Example: Those things in the rebel fleet, can't recall the name at the moment, Luke and Leia were standing on one at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, you know what I mean
Cruisers, while smaller than battleships, are still a devastating enemy. Cruisers are not necessarily faster than battleships, but their compact size makes them more maneuverable. In a capital ship fight, cruisers are generally used as tactical superiority vessels, using their speed to find advantageous positions.
GUNSHIP
General Class: Frigate
Example: The Millenium Falcon
Gunships are the most versatile ships in a Navy. They usually carry a small crew of three or four, and have decent firepower and maneuverability. They are the largest ships capable of landing directly on a planet and the smallest that are given names.
VERY HEAVY FIGHTER
General Class: Fighter
Example: Y-Wing
Very Heavy Fighters are lumbering crafts with strong weapons and shields, usually used as assault fighters or bombers. They sometimes require a gunner.
HEAVY FIGHTER
General Class: Fighter
Example: X-Wing
Heavy Fighters, despite their name, are the most versatile of the three basic types of fighters. They are generally maneuverable, with a decent weapons loadout. Most often they are used as space superiority fighters.
LIGHT FIGHTER
General Class: Fighter
Example: A-Wing
Light Fighters are exactly what their name suggests. They're usually fragile deathtraps, ready to explode if a laser even looks at it funny. They are usually used as interceptors.
This has been Arilias's Guide to Military Space Ships. Please pay attention, and realize that 1200 Warships (command ships) and 1400 battleships is, really, too much.
