2 models the same

Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

2 models the same

I have an existing ship that I have cloned. I have re-done the shiparch.ini to reflect the two seperate ships. Trouble is no matter what I do they both use the same MAT file.

In each folder is a completely different cmp and mat. They are the same basic ship, exported from Milkshape, but one is half the size so as to prove they are using different CMP's. The MAT's are different obviously to make it easier to spot them.

Now, if I go in as ship one I see ship one. If I go in as ship two I see ship two. No problem with that.

If a friend uses ship one and I use ship two on my server, the ships are different size, reflecting the fact they are using different CMP's as they should.

BUT whichever ship I choose my mates ship is the same colour, even though It's a different size.

They look different, as they should, in Milkshape, UTF-editor or HardCMP but not in the game.

If you get what I'm on about how do I get it to have two ships the same but coloured different?

rename the material references in one of the CMP's with freelancer model cloner and correct its .mat material&texture names with UTF edit

Hmmm,

Group names clash... got to have UNIQUE names for the first group in each case.. doesn't matter that they use the same .mat file ..

What we have here is .cmp confusion.. and this has been done to death..

USE THE FORUM SEARCH!!

he says both models appear on screen with the correctly sized meshs(so no mesh confusion), but the materials are duped. that is not a root name collision
"In each folder is a completely different cmp and mat. "

done to death?yes - but then why should anyone answer any question posed here when a few hours of fruitless searching might yield a relevant yet oh-so-dated thread

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with CMP confusion, they are completely different and have diffent names in them, moderator or not you are wrong, whether it's been done to death or not, still a valid question. We all haven't been doing this Modding since the game came out, so cut us Noobs some slack and let us feast upon the knowledge you experts apparently have.

Anyway I figured it out, it's the filenames of the textures, with them being the same in both MAT files it's only showing the one set. I renamed the files in one of the mats and all is well. I can even use the same CMP for both ships, with a little filepath editing using UTF-XML.

Thanks Cold_Void for you correct answer.

np, i am always glad to help with all but the most broad questions (like:How do i mod?) - but please, be nice to the moderators, sometimes their patience wears thin(God only knows mine does!) and for good reason; they do more in a day for TLR than i've done with all my 700 something posts. so please, be nice to the moderators - without them TLR would not be what it is today, a civil place to discuss every aspect of freelancer(except the C word hehe)

Yeah maybe I was a little short. It's just I go on a lot of forums and you inevitably get people who have been on the board for ages getting mardy with people asking questions - just because they have been asked a few months before.

One board I go on even had to ban people saying "Google is your friend" or "Search Google". People who can sign up to a forum and then make a post, can use Google and do, or search the forum itself. But as you say it's as easy if not better to ask your question as a better answer to your problem is provided by people who know. You may search through 1000's of crap links before you find the answer. Whereas posting a question yields a few, more prevalent, results.
