creating new star map textures

Ive noticed that many of the textures that make up the freelancer world, particularly the star maps look a bit poor. I have tried creating my own star map, but can such things be implemented into the game easily?

How does freelancer handle these textures? are they applied to a Box? or perhaps a sphere? Perhaps the same type of idea can be used for creating a new galaxy for the in-game map / waypoint plotter.

These textures a fairly simple to make, but the big problem is the rendering process which takes a while. If anybody wants some made, feel free to post here.

Hey there, Freedom,

I've been trying to make my own starspheres for a long time now, but I always get really crappy-looking turn-outs. I do know that these are spheres, but they use some sort of heavy-duty blending and smoothing of textures that I cannot figure out at all ...

But anyways, I thought I might see if you wanted to try to figure this out with someone's help - i'd be glad to try and work this through with the help of someone else like you.
I want to make some new starspheres for my mod (SirEx Mod), though I have not made a lot of pregress yet.

For my custom systems, I did modify some of the existing starspheres. If you just change the color, and maybe do some minor modifications to the original pcitures (like narrowing to Barrier so that it looks farther away), you can get nice results. For instance, I've darkened all the Liberty starspheres in combination with lower ambience values in the systems .ini files (my adaption of Louva-Deus "dark space" idea, ). I also made a kind of pink/purple starsphere based on the Li01 one, and made the edge tile smaller -with more black around it to keep the pic the same size) to make it look more to the south (as this system is north from Colorado).

I have no idea how to make totally new ones (although that must be possible).

I've been trying -using the UTF editor- for a few days now to make a starsphere that's supposed to be south of New York, between Calfornia and Texas. So, it needs both the Barrier and the large southern-hemisphere-dominating Walker nebula.

Alas, I haven't succeeded at all

I tried to add the Barrier data to the Li04 starsphere, but it won't show up, not even when I replaced the Cmpnd\Cons\Fix node data with that of the Li01 starsphere, both with and without updating the index numbers of the various parts. (It did deform the Walker nebula somewhat, but still the Barrier didn't show up).

I also tried to replace the Li01's Walker tile and data with the Li04 Walker tile and data, but that didn't work either...

I also used the CRC calculator to see if any of the filenames, object names etc. where in some of the (relevant) VMeshRefs, but I didn't founf anything...

Yet, it can't be all too hard if I would know where to search for... (well, that's true for about anything, is it? )

Anybody any ideas, tips, experience?

Thanks in advance!
