How to edit a Freelancer ship already in a mod?

I have looked and looked on the fourms about editing a ship that is already made and none helped me at all. I am trying to edit the color of a ship in a mod. I have the .mat .cmp and .sur files. The ship is currently red and I want to change it to blue. How do get to the point where I can change the color of ship. The programs I have are Milkshape, Gmax, and the photo shop program is Serif. Someone please tell me what to do. This is driving me crazy.

Use the search function on the main TLR page for UTF Editor. Use that to open the .mat file. Export the files in the tree (selecting as integer arays) to .tga files and edit in your paint program. Import back to the .mat file (not compressed) and play. There are better explanations if you use the SEARCH function in the forums

You want to look for the "Kasdias Texture Guide" which explains in detail how to do exactly what you want to do.
