Have model... Need it converted.

Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

Have model... Need it converted.

I'm not a modeller...
So I don't know how to do a conversion.
I've got a model in 3DS format, with about 22 texture files that come with it.
I've used the model in Poser 4, which only requires that I point to the folder that the files are in, and it sets everything up.
But I need it converted to CMP format, along with a matching MAT file.
(It also needs to be enlarged, and have hardpoints added, but I can do that with HardCmp and Model Tool.)

The file is about 700kb, and I can either provide a link to it, or email it.
The model is of the TCS Victory from the Wing Commander Games.
I'm hoping to add it to the "Privateer: The Reckoning" mod, in place of the Liberty Dreadnought that we're currently using.

Any help would be appreciated.
(And Acredited!)

Warzog,

Two suggestions:

1. Contact the owners and ask them for permission
2. when you do, ask them for any additional texture files, as this can cut down the conversion times by a fair margin.

P.S. I have looked at the model files and they dont seem terribly difficult

Harrier:
I gave you a short-shortcut to the models.
If you enter the site through the front-end, a pop-up gives permission to anyone wishing to use the models in any non-commercial, non-profit, project, as long as credit is given to the modeler(s).
Several of the modelers, you will find, are already listed as modelers in our mod.
On several of the pages I listed, you will find Tolwyn's name.
He is the same Tolwyn who created the Morningstar, and other ships in our mod.

As to extra textures...
The Ranger Class Carrier comes with 22 texture files.
Of those, besides the standard textures, are markings for about 4 different versions of the Ranger, including the TCS Victory, the TCS Liberty, the TCS Wellington, and the TCS Freedom.
All of the ships come with every texture available for it.

The Wing Commander Saga group has, of course, made exclusive textures which we can't obtain.
Likewise, many of the ships in our mod were given textures that are exclusive to our mod.

Warzog... I've taken a detailed look at the carrier model, and this is what I think...

1. The way its Materials and textures are set up doesn't translate directly to CMP/MAT very well. I tried a quick go at it, only to find that most of the model wasn't assigned textures properly, and once they were assigned, I had endless issues with whatever tweaks were done to make this model work for export to the Freespace II engine.

2. The model has some serious structural problems- mesh edges that aren't aligned/welded properly, and other things. And it has lots of greebles that are... to be charitable... poorly designed. MS3D's model cleaner helped some, but to really fix the geometry so that it was truly airtight would require an hour or so working on it with Rhino's poly toolkit. And it's such a simplistic design... why bother?

In short... I've messed with this file for about an hour, and I'm already very unexcited by the prospect of messing with it further- I'd rather rebuild it from scratch than keep messing with a model I don't much care for that would never look all that great in a newer game engine.

It's just not very well designed, as a game model, imho, and the texturing techniques used were super-primitive... it just uses tiles for everything, even where it doesn't make any sense. And having the "core" exposed like it does means that people will inevitably try to fly through it... only to run into the SUR... it'd be smarter (and lower polycount) to just model/skin some doors...

At any rate, I'd rather rebuild it from scratch... I could make a much nicer model, with a higher polycount to be sure... but only where it'd make sense, and much nicer UVmapped texturing. But you're going to have to stand in line... I have about 15 models that've been sent to me for WOS, and they all need fixing and skinning for Beta 1

Argh:
Rebuilding it isn't a problem.
HOWEVER!
It HAS to have the landing bay!!!
(It's a Carrier!)
And as such, running into the sur isn't a problem, the shields are still up.
Check out the TCS Vesuvius in v4.0, it's the same way.
Besides, I'm planning on replacing ALL of the Liberty Dreadoughts in the current mod.
(And several of them are bases.)
And none of the carriers in the Wing Commander Universe, that I know of, have doors, instead of an open landing bay.

Harrier:
I almost forgot...
The Bearcat in the above list was supposed to be in v4.0, but when Bob McDob converted it, there were several textures missing, and it causes crashes.

Disregard the Ranger/ TCS Victory.
While going through some old files that Tolwyn had sent me last year, I discovered a tiny model of it, labeled as the Concordia!
Anywho...
I have the model, and the mat file, already done.
I just need to resize it, and add a few missing weapon's hardpoints to get it working.

However, I could still use the other models.
