I purchased this 5 min ago...this is it???

Ok, time for the weekly Becket Rant.

I did not purchase this game 5 minutes ago. I purchased this game 10 days ago. I had the marketing beta a week before that. I also had the Demo a week before that. Tired of the game yet... no. I did finally install Master of Orion 3....which I played for about 15 minutes and returned to FL. I have won the single player on the Marketing beta and am about half way through on the full retail version. The experience that I must say is the greatest is the Multi Player. My housemate set up a server. I can get on the server whenever I wish as it is always running. I have logged quite a few hours and I cannot understand the 100,000 cr an hour run. OK sure you can buy yourself a big ole cargo boat load up on this that or other thing and make run after run until you have enough cr to buy a planet. You win. Now dont complain that "THATS IT????!@@@???". Because you know where to look on the spoiler forum to find the best route, the best ship and the best weps...means you win...hands down game over return it get your money back and go back to camping spawns on EQ..errr..earth and beyond freaks. I have spent hours logging jump holes and making a general menace outta my self. Now I can under stand if you like to trade....thats fine not everyone likes to blow hell outta the bad/good guys. Just dont ask where you can get the most cr for scrap metal...cardimine...whatever. Your bloody neural net tells you for goodness sake. Why in the name of the dark lords of the nine hells would you need to hit a forum and ask.."BEST TRADE RUN????". Rest assured you do that in 3 days time you will be back saying "THATS IT !!!!1111!!!???". Now I know some people are like kids at Christmas...they need to see everything as quick as possible. I can appreciate that.... Hell I have checked out the ship list...I know where the ships can be bought and have visited at least one of the bases for each. I still had to find the base. I know how to check the patrol paths I can find the jump holes...have I done it for the entire sirius sector yet?? Nope.. I am just having fun. My friend is a touch behind me so he is my clean up. I blow through torch a few convoys take the heat and he comes in and swoops up the spoils. Eventually I will have the Saber or the Titan or the Eagle...eventually I will have the level 10 guns and best shield. I wont try to get it the easy way. I know there are ways to do it. I dont want to be a Thats it person hoping x, x, and x will be out for the expansion which I know is coming but when? Well lets be realistic most expansions take at least 6 months to a year. If I can make this game last that long....sweet.

Sorry so long....but sometimes these things just have to be said.

You're a credit to all us Freelancer "purists" with that rendition Becket Velar.

Good post Becket Velar.

I know were you are coming from. I also want to find things and discover new places on my own without cheating. I have the Hammerhead ship, which I found on my own and I am still looking for the class 10 ships. I could cheat and go read the spoilers forums for thier location....but that would ruin the Freelancer experence for me. I also found some class 10 weapons. Awesome they are!
Now..if I could just find those class 10 ships they go with....

Post Fri Mar 14, 2003 3:47 pm

Yes I also have to agree! I took the easy root, and spoiled the game in like 4 days. Ah never mind, you learn from your mistakes. I have also moaned saying is that it! When in reality you are correct in what your saying.

Post Fri Mar 14, 2003 3:57 pm

Nice for you, have fun.

but

I want just to add that most the complain about lack of content are those that already found those stuff out on themself.

The only thing that I got spoiled, was the sunslayer torp luncher, and this cause someone set a wrong title and someone else make abit later in irc a remark about the system... those two combined gave away to location to me.

no other spoilers to me. (oh yeah wait, I read about "great" traderuns, which I never used, cause the real great onces are all in liberty space and make nearl 1 mil per hour ... and somehow I prefer not to fly first 1 hour to make than 1 hour easy and very profitable traderuns )

So, in other words, yeah I am bored already, not that bad, but well, and no, I am not one of those that ask for everything. Those IDIOTS that need to ask for every little spoiler, will be still much much longer entertained than me. Cause they are dumb enough to find challanges in the game with out any problems. they are dumb enough to get killed by the ai. and they are dumb enough to not finding those secrets (which they ask all the time to tell them) with out anyproblems on their own.

in other words, they will have still long time much to do in the game.

It´s back to slingshotting around planets and mining asteroids in Frontier First Encounters for me. =)

So...Apocalypse...you are telling me you found all the little nooks and cranies in what a week? Ok maybe you had the marketing beta and had it for longer but still you must have just had a slight case of the obsessive compulsives. I mean I played the marketing beta into the ground. My girlfriend laughs at me whilst I play the retail version online with my friends. I still got smoked in my stilletto(yes I must be one of the slow, special people because I am still flying that) by 8 Kusari Police and 8 Samura Hawks that decided to play kick the pirate. See I am pretty well hated universally by the corps and the cops and the bounty hunters. Some of the corps (the ones that havent flown across my bow or have been in Rhineland space) are neutral to dislike. See I still lose...after a week of play... I still dont know where all the jump holes are. I dont know where every hidden ship is. Hell I havent been to every system. Now what, in your opinion, am I doing wrong. I mean sure I may be savoring the backgrounds. I may enjoy kicking the hell outta starfliers in New York. Hunting down flights of Defenders for their Shield batteries and nanobots. I can completely understand why some people could get bore of this...but I cant understand how people could have possibly found every corner of this sector. The game has been out for a 10 day. Did you stay neutral with everyone and just trade lane to trade lane to trade lane...then look at the patrol routes from there? What about the systems with no trade lanes? It takes time to go from point a to point b with just the cruise on...it takes longer if people are knocking you outta cruise with disrupters.

Ah well I must be slow. But considering ignorance is bliss...I am quite content

Amen to the original post. You hit the nail on the head. I feel the exact same way.

If you've already bought the Titan, you should already know were to buy the Level 10 Shields from without giving anything away. Unless you forget to check!

Post Fri Mar 14, 2003 5:32 pm

I've been playing steadily since March 5th, and I just yesterday discovered where to buy the Titan. I finally made it to all 50 systems, and I've logged 60 jump holes. I still need to land on more than 10 bases, however. I haven't used any of the spoilers or anything. Exploring and trying to find everything out myself was great fun. I really loved when I got to planet Malta and right there was *POSSIBLE SPOILER* the remains of the hispania *END POSSIBLE SPOILER.* Man, that was such a cool moment. I'm still playing though, and I doubt I'll get bored for a very long time. I still need to find all those abandoned ships and land on the rest of the bases. And now that I have the Titan, I want to return to Liberty and just make a nuisance out of myself.

This game, re-playability aside for the moment, takes longer to "complete" than any other. I say complete in reference to finding the best tech, exploring all the systems, etc. I just bought Unreal 2 and C&C: Generals prior to this and I was through those in a couple days. I'm still rocking away in Freelancer.

There are three types of people I can't stand:
- Those who ask questions that are answered in plain sight or in the manual.
- Those who cheat then complain about ease (or get spoils then complain).
- Those who have warez and expect any sort of help or recognition.

Back to the game, though... I'm into my second time through the SP story and am scheduled to meet Juni to begin heading out of Britonia space. Now I could, like I did the first time, just chug along through the story, but this time I'm kicking back and seeing what I can see where I am. I've been going in and out of Liberty space and improving my rep with the Lane Hackers, Outcasts, and Liberty Rogues-- simply by killing Liberty forces that already hate me. I'm also going all through Liberty and Britonia finding pirate bases to see what they've got that might give me an edge in the SP mission.

Moral of the story is: you can make this game last damn long if you put in the effort.

The best part of Freelancer is exploring and making your own way at your own pace. When I found the Dromedary freighter it became a major side quest to aquire it when I got to level 10. It was really the best mission so far since I did it with the Rogues, Outcasts, Bounty Hunters, and Lane Hackers all after me. Only the Base where I bought the Dromedary was neutral and when I left it became hostile too! Getting away with it took everything, including the kitchen sink, but it was definately worth it because with trading routes I explored the available universe and earned 2.3 million in the process. Yet, I am only on Mission 8...... and yes, still in the Dromedary!! Have to retire it soon tho I guess.

I bought Freelancer the day it came out, been playing it since. I just ignore Juni missions till I am done exploring and that is how I recommend playing the game.

Mmmmmmm, Turret-View!!

To the original poster. Yes it is fun to find all the hidden ships and wrecks and bases. But what do you do when your done? Do you go around and explore it all again? Run the same trade run over and over? I could play privateer for hours and not get sick of it. If it would run on my computer, I would still be playing.

Maybe it's the fact that I expected this game to be like pivateer. When it was first announced, which is the only annoucement I ever paid attention too, I pictured a modern privateer that was bigger and better. That's what it sounded like to me.

Maybe that fact biases my opinion to much. Anyways, still waiting for my replacement to privateer.

Your post is what mt friend who lives on my street needs to hear. He whines and complains about its too easy cause he used codes and that he found everything after 1 week. I'm gonna send him straight to this post.

I agree. Certainly this game was a true explorer's game. Not like other games, where you "beat" the linear storyline and that's it, you're done, you've explored everything, but instead, you finish Freelancer, and you've found about half of the map, and maybe a quarter of the really fun stuff. Exploring really kept me into it, and I don't think I can say I'm ever done. Man I still need to find that Dragon base... dont' tell me, i'll get it. Anyway, great job on the exploration aspect. Some of those "unknown systems are simply breathtaking, totally empty except for a giant sun with a ring around it? It makes my heart skip a beat trying to fathom a system like that. That's what makes this game so good, in my opinion.
