6 things that I feel would be easily added by a patch/expans

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

X2 looks very, very promising. I'm quite excited for it's release... I didn't follow the whole Freelancer ordeal over the past 5 years, but I'm already more excited for X2 than I was for Freelancer. BUT, there's always that chance that they were too ambitious (Battlecruiser 3000AD suffered from this I hear). There's a reason Freelancer isn't the game it was supposed to be... And it's also German, so voice translations might not be very good. Anyway, X2 is currently my #1 most anticipated game

I've decided that the two things that I REALLY want are these:

-Ability to demand people drop their cargo

-Many more types of random missions (I mean like 10 new kinds... not just 1 or two, although I wouldn't complain if they just added 1 or 2.. lol)

Those two features would make Freelancer 2x the game it is right now... and that's saying something. The other ones I listed would all be FANTASTIC additions, but those two stand out above all others in my mind. Both would be something that could be added in a mega-patch. I'm optomistic that these two features will be implemented.

Also, I'd like to mention that the "random" economy sounds better than the dynamic one... for one, it'd be 20x easier for them to implement, and secondly, it would actually be more realistic, since you are just a Freelancer with a reletively small ship. But, we shouldn't hold our breath on that one - that's a huge programming ordeal, and I doubt they'll do it.

Maybe they won't re-read actor lines, but at least make the NO CUTSCENES option apply to this mindless babbling!

I agree, more mission types would be the easiest way to make the game more enjoyable.

A little variation in the missions, like was originally intended (following transcript from Gamespot preview with Chris Roberts way back in the day):

"Roberts says there are about 16 mission templates - cargo runs, escort missions, search and destroy - reconnaissance, bounty hunts, smuggling, and more. Then there are different variations on these themes, depending on who gives you the missions, what ships you have to destroy or defend, the cargo you need to carry, and so forth. With these combinations, Microsoft is boasting that the game has over 300 specific missions"

I like this game a lot and have been playing it nearly every moment of my spare time since I got it, but if I compare it to Freespace 2 or even Privateer 2: The Darkening (taking in to account how OLD those games are) I feel it missed the mark!

The general consensus seems to be that there are so many things that would have been easily implemented, but were mysteriously dropped. A few examples where this is obvious are:

The random missions: The SP campaign has you doing several of those types of missions that we wanted, why can't the same scripts be adapted to random missions?

Commodity computer: You can see info on commodities, but only if you're carrying them . Seems a little odd to me

Multiplayer Character: It even shows your character (Trent) just standing there in an idle animation. Obviously at some point you would have been able to select different attributes. The NPC's can do it, why can't we?

Ship Upgrades: A lot of the files for this are still there. I don't see what's wrong with buying better armor, engines, sensors, etc. I'd like to still be flying the Defender at the end of the game.

There are others, but those are some of the most blatant ones. Another one I'd like to see is a button on the traders to "sell all" or "sell excess"

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world:
those who understand binary, and those who don't.

#1 would be nice, especially more high-level ships, perhaps a light fighter and a freighter. Or at least more high-level heavy fighters, as it stands you're probably going to end up with one of three different ships in the end, as not many ships can carry high level weapons.

I strongly STRONGLY agree with #3, this is one of my two major complaints, and really wouldn't be to hard to fix.

I'd also like to be able to use your character in different servers in multiplayer, I don't see why this would be particularly difficult.

As long as we are dreaming, here's my wish list: (not all ideas are mine)

1. Temporary fluctuations in price of commodities on a planet, eg drought will cause the price of water to shoot up 1000% (or whatever). If you're in the right place at the right time, you can make a killing on the market. Other examples - civil war (price of arms go up), BIG construction contract (price of construction machinery, parts, etc go up in a shipyard).

2. Commodity prices subject to a +/- 10% fluctuation to reflect "market changes". So if you buy stuff where the price differential is small, you may just make a loss instead of a profit.

3. More variety of missions, including cargo runs (urgent delivery to whatever system), escort missions (you fail if the ship you escort gets destroyed, plus your rep takes a hit), scout/investigation missions, rescues, base defense, cargo retrieval (something important is floating somewhere in space, I'm hiring YOU to get it for me), patrols (move from waypoint to waypoint, clearing enemies as you go along), etc.

4. The ability to hit "Esc" to bypass the scripted cutscenes.

5. Ability to hire escorts if you're playing as a merchant. Heck, ability to hire wingmen if you feel you need more firepower for a mission!

6. Populate the worlds with NPCs who are totally irrelevant & who have nothing to say. As it is now the planets, bases look awfully empty... In other words, pu tin "filler" that gives the impression of a bustling place, if appropriate.
