Because airplanes look cool. Besides, the ships do fly through the atmosphere once in a while. Wings are good in atmosphere. But even then, the Crusader, Hammerhead, Rhino... don't really have airfoils.

The F-22 can't shoot down ICBMs. ICBMs can travel 15,000 miles per hour, and max altitude can be 500 miles. Also, most radars just aren't made to travel targets travelling that fast.

However, I think it is the Air Force's goal to have the F-22 be the equivalent of cloaked Valkryies attacking an unarmed Starflier

I find it strange that everyone except the "Super Powers" has a Very Heavy Fighter class ship, there's even a civilian VHF. Its as if the rich powerful people were all driving around in Volkswagens where as people earning minimum wage were driving Ferraris.

Now for those that are interested:

I think the F-22 would have quite a hard time taking down an S-37 "Berkut".

As far as the Germans in WW2 are concerned, I'd say they had a tie for the "Best Tank of the War" award between the Hunting Panther and the Hunting Tiger.

The Hunting Tiger was a Tank Destroyer and was nearly invulnerable, it had a weight of 80 tons, 32" wide treads, and at its thickest point the armor was nearly a foot thick. It mounted a super high-velocity 128mm cannon. The only weakness the Hunting Tiger had was that because of its great weight it was underpowered and needed roads for any sustained movement. Once it got where it was going however that didn't matter much. Most were disabled rather than destroyed.

The Panther Tank on the other hand was a Main Battle Tank. It weighed 49 tons and, with a speed of 30 m.p.h., was highly maneuverable. It mounted a special ultra high-velocity 75mm gun which could punch holes in the heaviest armor at a range of 1,640 yards (a limit imposed by the sights, not the gun). At its thickest point the armor was nearly half a foot thick. It performed with distinction against Shermans, Churchills, and T-34s and overwhelmed rather than overmatched by its opponents.
