Doomsday74,
And groups like the Corsairs would care about that influence... how? All they'd have to do is send a dozen Titans into Liberty space and they could take it over easily.

Also explained in the story. The corsairs aren't interested in Liberty. They want Gold. And they are trying to get it .... from Bretonia. But they're running into resistance from both the Bretonia Navy and from the Mollys. The Brets built the Cambridge line to keep the Corsairs out, but it doesn't really work that well.

I would figure that the Corsairs don't see anything of interest in Liberty. It's all mined out and is only valueable as a place to sell Cardamine at. Which btw is what the Outcasts are trying to do, conquer the colonies by getting them hooked on drugs.

Plus what would they do if they did conquer Liberty? The Liberty gov't can barely run it, how would a handful of pirates do it?

Though personally I wouldn't mind watching a dozen titans vs liberty's 6 cruisers, a battleship, 1 dozen defenders, 6 or 7 patriots and another dozen bounty hunters and about 2 or 3 shipping company traders with their escorts...

2 Friends and I started causing trouble near West Point in New York, and with minutes we were pretty much getting attacked by everything I listed except for the cruisers (replace them with the West Point Academy and the trade lane gates shooting at us). What's worse is that reinforcements were constantly coming through and at any one time you couldn't see anything because of the sheer amount of laser fire going everywhere. Ofcourse it looked much cooler cos us 3 were slightly scattered so the laser shots did seem to be going EVERYWHERE...

It took us a good 15-20 mins to clear out all the attackers there, with each of us constantly running off, docking to sell our loot and then fly back to collect more and attack more.

FL is like most RPGs in that you start out low-level and become high-level, with better gear and all that. As player capabilities increase, the baddies' capabilities have to increase as well to keep challenging the player. So the game world has to have the full spectrum of places that range from easy to hard, which the player is expected to move through in order.

This is why Liberty ships and gear are weak compared to other places. The SP game starts in Libery, so that's the "newbie" area with the weak stuff.

Perhaps the criminals don't have access codes for the gates and lanes... Like when you first started the game...

And you guys complain too much... Remember the days when planets & suns where just part of the scenery? They finally made them approachable and all you guys do is bitch about its size & length... err that doesn't sound right...

Freespace 2...

Now what about it?

And I'm not quite sure what you mean with your last statement. In terms of technology, we've come quite a long way in 10 years. If you're talking about CONTENT, well that's pretty hard to pair with today's technology. Effectively, that is...

Think of it this way: for every Elite, Privateer, WC, Descent, X-wing, and Freelancer, you have how many bombs?

I understand about liberty ships being weaker than rheiland......and I also understand the rpg aspect and that you start off in liberty and gradually improve throughout the game as you get access to newer and better systems.....but I think they could have still giving liberty stronger ships......all they had to do was make a ship in each system that you can't have access to until you gain the experience/level.....then each system would have a ship that could be formadible against each other....one thing I know that I disliked in the game was in the discriptions of the ship they say that one of the ships in liberty is the top of the line (I believe it was the defender) but it isn't even in the top 20 of the best ships in the game......so in essence, liberty's strongest ship is weaker than any other systems weakest ship......It's ok like it is for the fun aspect....but for the rpg aspect it could have been better thought out......I can't believe they spent so many years developing this game and have so many screwed aspects in the game......but I applaud their efforts, the game is still good and worth playing, but this game really needs a patch/expansion/mod or something for some of the simplier things in the game.....like juni always flying a defender.....now if I was to fly a defender against cosairs, nomads, hessains.....I wouldn't make it 100 feet away from the jump gate before I get vaporized......I just use my imagination and tell myself that juni doesn't have the average ship that I have access too.....hers is a super defender if you will......

I just thought of something that might repair the logic a bit (I said MIGHT!)...

The police (and military) have cruisers and battle ships... they care not for puny fighters...

Reread my post..

I'm just saying that it's been 10 odd years since I played elite 2 and that game simply puts a spanking on freelancer. The only thing that freelancer has on elite 2 beyond graphics is a storyline (even though it's weak).

I take it I am the only one here who can take on 20+ defenders/patriots/starfliers/freighters with the default starflier you get when you start the MP game and not die?

Maybe, just maybe Juni is skillful? (let's ignore the fact that she spends ALL her time with no shields and a millimetre of health and massive smoke and fire trails behind her...)

Besides, judging from the SP missions Liberty certainly prefers quantity over quality... Remember them attacking that space station in the badlands when you and Juni are running like little girls? There must've been atleast 30 fighters and the cruiser in that battle... All for one station...

"I take it I am the only one here who can take on 20+ defenders/patriots/starfliers/freighters with the default starflier you get when you start the MP game and not die?"

I can't in mp because I lag too much with that many ships flying around.. IN sp that's easy.

"Maybe, just maybe Juni is skillful? (let's ignore the fact that she spends ALL her time with no shields and a millimetre of health and massive smoke and fire trails behind her...)"

That's funny I never once saw her ship hurt beyond a little shields being gone. I dunno why but the AI spends all it's time on me only

I'm really tempted to start this game over to play with a frieghter. Since the global server thingy is broke for me.

All I know is I'm enjoying this game more than Freespace and the X-wing games I've played. And the more I hear about Elite and Privateer, the more I don't want to play them. I'm afraid I'll become, well, an elitist.

I BET that if this game did have everything Elite and Privateer had, there'd just be another group of people that'd pan it for being those games with just updated graphics... The new players have it best - they enjoy the game on its own merits.

As for the whole ship balancing thing...GO MOD COMMUNITY GO! Hehe
What I mean by that is, make a mod that just switches some ships around the bases so that you get a good distribution of ship strength around all 4 territories. Of course there should still be a semblance of the trend in effect right now, since the enemies DO get harder as you cycle through the systems.

You gotta be kidding me. Elite may have a dynamic economy but that's the only area where it's "better" than Freelancer. In terms of graphics, sound, story, shear size of the playing area and even dare I say it GAMEPLAY, it blows Elite out of the water.

Post Thu Mar 13, 2003 8:23 am

Aerundel,

Stay away from Privateer 2. That game sucks. You're better of playing Freelancer twice. You still might be able to find Privateer if you go dumpster diving at the local bargain bin under the EA Classic series (BTW do not collide with the asteroids, you will not bounce off ). Elite should be available online if you look around. You need a DOS boot disk and some knowledge of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to get it working.

How can you say that!? The X-wing series is the best no matter what... I would choose vector graphics over polygons any day...

Just joking, but I don't think they belong in the same category... Freelancer is more of a RPG than a sim (You don't even need to remember any keys for God's sake... in X-wing series there are over 50!)
