What do YOU see? (Or: The Future of FreeLancer.)

Greetings All,

As you play this wonderful game what do you see in regards to it's future?

Do you even thinks it has a future?
Or, will it go the way of many games and be a "Was fun for a while, what's next?" type of game?

I, personally, can see it being around for quite a while.
(Even if DA/M$ choose not to release any "Expansion Packs", or even patch the few things that have been requested numerous times by many players.)

I can see a very good "Modding Community" developing already, and the game has been "officially" out only a week.
And, that usually means that a game will at least have a strong "cult" following which can make it last far beyond what it normally would...look at "HardWar" for example.
I can see this "modding community" taking this "base product" and making it something that even the "nay-sayers" can't complain about.

Anyone have any predictions on what will come in the future of this game we are all here to enjoy?

Be Well,

Pyrate Dredd

My biggest fear is it having Microsoft's name on it. God knows what they'll do. They're not likely to care if it has a cult following like smaller developers would. I could see them porting it to the XBox to milk it for money in the game console arena and then letting it die. That's my fear.

My hope, however, is a series of official add-on packs with additional stories, ships, missions, weapons, bug fixes, etc. I'd even be willing to pay for them. Eventually MS could re-release a gold edition (or something) with a lot of them included to pick up even more sales on the PC front. There's a lot of potential for the story; especially considering we don't even know anything about the ****SPOILER****. I also wouldn't mind a more linear game based in this galaxy where you can take on the roll of a pilot in one of the militaries.

I can't say I have really thought about it Dredd, good question though. I do hope you are right about it sticking around for a while. It certainly has tremendous potenetial for 3rd party modification but I really am wondering what Digital Anvil will be doing next.

Either way it'll certainly be interesting to watch.

The game has tons of potential and even more with what the modding community has either churned out or are working on. With the ingenuousness of the modders, I have no doubt that we'll see mods released where you can play the role of a Liberty Navy pilot taking Navy missions. Would probably be some work but I'm sure we have seen some of the mods released for other titles.

I see it *rapidly* hitting the XBox, as it seems ready made for consoles. Graphics probably wouldn't even need to be toned down any. As for the future on PC? Not much. Unless the modders quickly start churning stuff out, I get the feeling Freelancer is gonna die fast.

I think the game would be very suitable for an x-box release aswell. Without a good modding community I'm not sure it will last that long though, but since there already seems to be one getting started, who knows.

Havent thought about it yet Dredd.
Still waiting for the game, but with the mods that are released already, the future looks bright for FL

I do see expansion packs coming from DA/M$ as well though.

There is little other logical reason for them to have left so many sectors out of the official storyline unless they already had plans to SELL us the story to go along with all the extra space.

At least that is what *I* would do if I had designed/produced this game.

Not to spray lighter fluid, but an X-box port would require gamepad/joystick SUPPORT!

Narrr!! Ha ha ha ha ha.

I just hope microshaft doesn't kill FL with anti-mod attitude or crapp expansion packs. Frankly, I'm surprised they had the vision to release it at all. From the amount of online activity, people are starving for decent space action!

Actually, that's not true. You could just put a keyboard and mouse in the usb slots. Everquest for PS2 uses keyboard and mouse, I don't see why an Xbox port of FL couldn't also.

What i'd like to see is a complex multiplayer mod. Pick your own faction in the beginning, and start at a system where that faction owns a base. Also it would be cool to start your own faction, if you have enough people, and you can buy cap ships, bases(which can be destroyed), and some AI fighters to defend your base as well. Cap ships can act like carriers, faction members can pilot it, and launch ships from it, when no one is piloting it, AI will control it.

Here here, Exodus. I would LOVE to see something like that in action.

Are you going to pay my monthly subscription fee? As well as paying my broadband access? If so, you are a kind and charitable person, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

...And If your not going to pay any of those, then why bring it up then?

Cheers!

yeah right, a game that use on purpose no joystick, to make the game fair for those that do not own one (well, some cynics may say, to get a better profit with the "no need for joystick" argument ), will now force a console gamer, to buy a usb keyboard and mouse. right
