I was wondering if anyone out there knew if Freelancer is Multithreaded?
Yes, Freelancer Demo is multi-threaded. And I suspect that the full version is as well (changing things like thread count would be a major design change during Beta test). When you start the application, there are 13 live threads while the movie logos are played for MS and DA. Once the main menu appears, it drops to 6, and then shortly after (about 2 seconds) a 7th thread goes active.
I don't know about the server piece yet....

very kewl idea indeed. However, after I posted, I continued to play the demo for about an hour and a half. I took a look at how it was performing and noticed that, only 1 thread was executing roughly 95% of that time, while one other thread executed probably like, 4.5% and the other 5 hardly ever ran. If the spread was much more evenly distributed, then merely to play FL, upgrading to a P4 3.x would be fully justified. Unfortunately, it looks like DA & MS didn't take full advantage of multiprocessing.
But wait! Could it be? The hyperthreading model of the P4 may allow single threaded applications (which is essentially what FL is ) to execute through two simultaneous execution paths in the CPU; then yes it would be very worthwhile to upgrade to a P4 3.x GHz. But I don't know enough about Intel's hyperthreading model to say that this is true.

I guess we'll all have to see about that when newer games come out. It used to be that all you needed was a dual motherboard. But I think now if you want a dual CPU rig you have to use Xeon processors. Which sucks because I have three systems on P4 2.4gig processors and that could mean that a dual rig is out of my grasp now. (

Easy Rhino, I don't think the server is CPU intensive really. I mean you are right that you can start up a dedicated server and then go back and start up the game and play on your own server as well. So it's not that major a straign on your system. Then again all three of my systems have anywhere from 700 to 1000 megs of memory so I don't know really.
