Developers? Microsoft?

Just wondering, Has anyone heard anything or talked to anyone directly involved with the game? I was just wondering because there seems to be alot of issues with this game and t'd be nice to know if the developers were aware of the problem and if they were working on it. It would also be nice to see if some of the ideas around here were doable or not.

Thanks

There aren't really "issues" with the game, besides the ATI hardware acceleration and the multiplayer exploits. Most people are just complaining about features they wanted but didn't get. And most of THAT is because they read every bit of hype for this game and then neglected to read the stuff that would be dropped before even implemented. A lot of false hope and ignorance, IMO.

Generally, for newcomers to the game's "history", they'll like the game, as long as they know one thing - no joystick support. That's the ONLY thing I knew about this game before the demo came out (besides the lengthy development period), and I really like this game. I haven't played any WC, Privateer, X, or Elite game either. So I'm not "tainted" with that legacy =T

consider yourself lucky then not to have the taint The game does have issues to me however, it' been gutted. They have a huge, impressive universe with hardly any content. Frankly, the game is not fun after a couple of hours of play after the SP missions. I just hate to see 5 yrs of hard work go down the tubes when it could be ALOT more.

When you do get sick of this, I suggest you pick up a copy of privateer. It's abandonware, but you can still find it. You'll see what the rest of us are talking about

I'm afraid that when I get it, I'll be bored with it because you guys overhyped it so much. See, it goes both ways =P

lol Aerundel, i take offense in your wording of false hope and ignorance. We (the fanbase that followed the games from wing commander 1,2,3,4,5, privateer 1 and paid over the cash to buy the games all them years ago are what helped the deams and visions of Chris Roberts come to the PC screen.
If they maked it all happen back in the days of my 486 with out a problem than what happened in the 3 to 4 odd years it took to make this game?
I go on the record to say Yes I like the game as it is now. The message however that most of this community is trying to get to the dev team is that after seeing the game in this form, we feel let down by the standard that was set from the games that the company made it. Before it changed to DA from Origin.

there is no hype with privateer. It's been out awhile and it's well known what it is capable of. I haven't followed the hype of this game. As a matter of fact, I ignored it feeling confident that this design team would make a game that I would love, like all the other WC and privateer games. Then last week, I saw on eb that freelancer was for sale. I rushed to the store, bought it, played it and was disappointed in the content. The base is there, all it needs is an expansion pack to get the content up to speed. Once that is done This will be an excellent game. If it isn't done, well it will be a disappointment to say the least

What I meant by false hope was all the joystick people and MMORPG wanters.

I mean, when I started playing the demo and visiting the forums, I heard a whole bunch of people complaining that it was supposed to be an MMORPG.

But then people that have TRULY followed the game just said, "the MMORPG was a feature that was considered later in development but then was turned down".

So when I read that I wondered, "well, if the stupid guy yelling about the MMORPG had read more about it like the other guy, he wouldn't be shooting his mouth off!" So really that's what I meant with my statement.

And crashed, what you just said is the very definition of hype. You're saying this game sucks (relatively speaking), and that game's better. I'm not saying that it's a high degree of hype, or that it's misleading, but it is what it is. Like when my friend hyped Fast and the Furious, and then I finally watched it, and I was like "wtf...? THAT'S what you've been yelling about all this time!?!?"

I never said the game sucked, I'm saying this game needs work. There's a difference. I'm not hyped up about anything, I'm just saying what (I feel) would make the game more enjoyable.

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 8:04 am

And how is what i said hype? How the hell can you hype a game that has been out for 10 years?

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 3:20 pm

Crashed,

I have the same question too. You can't hype Privateer because it has been out for 10 years now. It might have been hyped back in 1992 and it lived up to that hype. Now it has the status of legendary.

If one is considered "tainted" by WC and Privateer in today's computer game industry, then I thank God I am not apart of the current generation.

Somehow nobody's been able to answer the question posed by the thread-starter... HAS anyone heard a peep from any developer at all? I notice there's no official community based off the MS Freelancer site, so one has to wonder which one (if any) the devs are looking at for feedback from the community.

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 4:06 pm

I'm pretty sure no developer has given any word on implementing new features. I'd actually be fairly surprised if they did for an expansion pack. But for a sequel, most definitely.

crashed, I'm a big big big Privateer fan as well. I can certainly see how your impression of Freelancer depended on how well you 'followed the hype', so to speak. Personally I think Freelancer is a godsend after so many years of lackluster space sims, particularly the Privateer-esque ones. I also think Freelancer does a number of things better than Privateer does (besides graphics), even if it's worse in other areas. I don't know if I can ultimately convince the disappointment out of you, but it might be lessened somewhat when you start to take a look at what IS better in Freelancer. I leave it to you to discover for yourself what that may be.

Have faith, though, that the sequel will have what you're truly looking for.

The devs are looking - I know... Though I can not get any word out of them concerning add-ons/expansion packs/FL2.

I guess they felt FL got way to prematurly announced, so now we will have to wait untill close to release! :-/

Bhurak,

I should have worded things differently. I am not disappointed in the game so to speak. Like you said, this game has been a great improvement based on the current games out there. I guess you could say I'm disappointed in what the game could be. I don't know if you agree, but I see so much unused potential in this engine. As it stands right now, I'm glad I bought this game and hopefully it supports digital anvil in bringing a sequel to it. But the game could have been alot more

Also, It would be nice, if not just to hear from the developers. Right now, it feels like the game was just thrown out there.

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 8:28 pm

Crashed, it doesn't matter if Privateer's 10 years old...because I haven't played it yet. Therefore, you're "selling" the game to me. And when you do that, you have to say something about it that will get me interested, right? And what you're saying is that it's BETTER than Freelancer. Well, what's the difference between that and "Freelancer will be better than Privateer?" There's no difference, because their respective audiences haven't played the game yet. So you're hyping Privateer as a better, more original game than Freelancer.

And notice I added "(relatively speaking)" after "sucks". I just didn't want to bother writing out exactly how you felt about the game. Call it liberal paraphrasing - happens on the web all the time =P
