I am the ONLY FreeLancer!

*IN Character*

Greetings,

I just want you all to know that apparently *I* am the ONLY "freelancer" in the Sirius System.

That's right, I have flown endless miles in space and have found NO other being which is not aligned with some group, government, or guild.

I am the last of my breed it seems.

Fly well,

Captain Dredd
Last FreeLancer

============================

*OUT Of Character*

Does it seem odd to anyone else that we, the player, are the ONLY person in the entire game that is not part of a bigger group?
We are the ONLY "freelancer" in the ENTIRE Sirius System?

Anyone that gets a bug up their bum can feel free to blow us to spacedust, with no worries of reprisals from ANYONE else in the system.
Yet, no matter whom we decide we wish to engage in battle we must always fear what their guildmates will do as revenge.

Does this seem odd?

I think that either;
A ) There should have been another "faction" added to the game. A faction of "freelancers", which would ALWAYS be neutral to the player unless the player has previously attacked that INDIVIDUAL member.
Yeah, a lot of programming, but would make more sense than it currently is, and would add a lot of flavour and even more options for the player.

or

B ) They should have actually allowed players to JOIN a faction and thereby gain the BENEFITS of being a member...like unwavering support in combat, hailing for "backup" in battles as they seem to do, better prices at faction planets/bases for selling/buying, and maybe even some faction only ships (Like make the best ship of each faction be sellable to members only.), etc.
This seemingly would have taken far less work than "Option A" above, but they seem to have been to stuck on the name being "FreeLancer" to tie it into the "StarLancer" game that they made some rather strange desicion, and also seem to use the title as an excuse for those decisions(Or at least the title seems to be the justification that many FANS give for the way many things are in the game).

Yeah, the game IS called "FreeLancer", I know.
(So please save the apparently standard "But it is called FREELANCER for a REASON!" comments for somebody whom hasn't read that 10,000 times, it is getting old, thanks. )
But, when the ONLY "freelancer" in the ENTIRE game is the PLAYER they may as well have just named it "OutCast"...because that is what the player TRULY seems to be, an outcast which is never truly accepted into any group no matter how well he proves his loyalty and intentions.

Any comments/theories are welcome.
But please, try to keep this a conversation about the concepts of the topic and game, and not allow it to become a "if you don't like it then don't play it" thread or a "flamewar", thanks.

Fly well,

Pyrate Dredd

I agree with you completely... And have only one comment to make: they couldn't call it OutCast, either, or else you'd have the Outcasts calling for your blood over copyright infringement, neh?

Not only are you the only freelancer... you are apparently also the most hated individual in all the galaxy. A lone pirate can be fighting for his life against four bounty hunters and the minute you show up and try to quietly sidestep the whole engagement... BAM! He's not only fired a cruise disruptor up your tailpipe, but he's coming to finish the job with his four attackers still busily setting fire to various parts of his ship. He's not gonna make it, but with his dying breath he'll spit in your general direction.

Now THAT'S hatred!

multiplayer

As some people here love to point out whenever a flaw in MP is brought up...

"SINGLEPLAYER is the MAIN focus of the game.
Multiplayer is just an 'added bonus'."

In an area of space as big as is given in FreeLancer it makes no sense that every single person "belongs" except ONE.

I don't understand, I wasn't bringing up a flaw in mp. I was saying that multiplayer has multiple Freelancers.

I agree with you, Cptn. Dredd, it would be nice to be able to be part of a group instead of a lone (and often hated) entity wandering through Sirius.
Although, instead of being able to join a faction, I would setlle for not being attacked all the time, for instance, whenever I leave a trade lane and enter a battle between criminals and police, everyone who dislikes me drops whatever they are doing, and attacks me. I would prefer if they just kept fighting each other and let me slip through unnoticed. This would probably be an easier mod/patch than one allowing joining of factions, and it would make travel much easier.

I know.

And I was bringing up the fact that MP is NOT the actual game, but only an "added bonus" to the game.

I was "turning their own words against them" so to speak.

It seems that if you say "x" is bad about MP then they say "But SP is the main part of the game, judge it by it's SP game!".

Get what I was trying to say now mate?

Be well,

I'm wonder how many people called Trent, codenamed "Freelancer Alpha1-1" are flying around in multiplayer.

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 3:48 am

They number them differently. If you listen when they dock, they'll say something like "Freelancer alpha one dash thirteen, you are cleared to land"

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 3:49 am

You know what they need? plain old civilians. Little puny civilians probably without guns on their puny little ships. That would make for a freelancer i guess...bounty hunters are a bit like freelancers, although they only get to do kill missions and stuff like that

*If you have a cat and a dog in the same house, will that be a problem? Of course not, you might just have solved world hunger*

As far as the SP character seems concerned, you only do kill missions to. Oh, but to bring a ton of Oxygen to Omicron Theta. Or some such.

All I can say is that you have a LOT of complaints Dredd, im surprised you haven't uninstalled freelancer and returned it.

I don't really run this place but I have an understanding with the people who do.

Perhaps you could try to see the difference between a "complaint" and an "observation".

Just because somebody says something that isn't "worshiping" the product and it's developers doesn't mean they are "complaining".
I still suggest to friends they get the game and play it.
But, I do not just mention all the "good" things and conveniently forget it's flaws/shortcomings.
That, in my opinion, is the differecnce between a "fan" (From the word FANATIC!) and a "player".
I am a FreeLancer "player".

I've even had them forget their battle altogether just to gang up on me. Maybe the reward for killing the only Freelancer in the galaxy is better than killing one of a thousand pirates.
