Regarding: These Forums

Greetings all,

I have been posting in these forums for a while, and reading them much longer.

I just wanted to know if anyone else thinks they make finding information, and even keeping track of "favourite posts" rather difficult.

I DO NOT mean this as an insult to the Administration here, in fact I thank them for even taking the time and effort to offer the services!

But, the general functions seem to be lacking a bit.

Examples:

A ) The "show posts from last X days".
If you set it to just the last couple of days and actually miss checking the forum for just one day you must then set it higher(Instead of just clicking "Page Two" like most other foums do.), which in turn seems to overload the server and either cause "page cannot be found" errors or it just takes forever for the topics to be parsed.
Plus, if too many people have it set to "Show topics from last year" then you have it being TOTALLY bogged down if even a handful of members are using it at one time...plus it makes DOS attacks on the forum VERY easy to do! One machine could have this forum dead/unusable without even having to know how to program or even know what DOS stands for! LMAO! That just seems to be a bad way to display the topics.

B ) "Search" function turned off.
This was turned off due to a huge jump in visitors right before the games release. Wise thing to do. But, I watch the "logged in" numbers and they seem to have settled down drastically. Perhaps it would be safe to turn it back on and see if it is feasible to use it again.

C ) "New Posts" icon not accurate.
It just doesn't seem to actually show which posts are TRULY "new" or have new posts added to them. Usually it only has the "new post" icon for about the top 15 posts, even if everyone on the page is actually new.
Or, it shows a bunch of "new" posts but when checked there have actually been none added to the thread..
Have no idea why/how this happens, but it happens on both computers I log in from at different locations and different ISPs. So, I think it again is some kind of parsing error. Dunno.

D ) "Show X posts per page" doesn't seem to work.
No matter now many posts you select it always seems to reset to the default "20 posts per page".

E ) No "jump to page X" option.
In many/most forum there is a listing of pages right under the Topic Title so that readers following the thread don't always have to open the first page, let it load, then select whichever page they last read.
Perhaps this could be added? It saves a lot of time having to load only one page per thread in contrast to two pages per thread...again this effects low bandwidth people much more, but even saves time for broadband users as well.

F ) No "hide email from other users" option.
I may just be paranoid, but I don't like just anybody to be able to look at my profile and have my email address...which is why I have changed it to a bogus one.
However, I DO like the Admins to be able to email me! And, having to use a bogus one to prevent my address being put on spam lists makes this impossible.
It also leads to other users using bogus email adresses for the same privacy reasons, and if they accidentally click "be notified of replies to this topic" the Admins get flooded with "mail returned" emails.

G ) "Usergroups"
It may be nice to offer a "Usergroups" feature.
They can be used for things like "clans", "guilds", "modder groups", etc.
They have several uses, but I do not really have the time to go into them all right now.

H ) Private Messages
Perhaps it would be nice to also offer this feature?
It ties in with hiding one's email address(for obvious reasons) but still being able to have other users send direct messages to each other.

Well, that is all I can think of right now.

And I DO know how hard it is run run these "open" forums.
I have Moderated, Hosted, and Administrated many over the years.
If you would like to see an example one I set up, but have temporarily deserted due to real-life time problems, you can check it out HERE.

As I said, this is not meant as an insult to the Admins, but merely as a string of possible suggestions to improve something we all use and have grown to depend upon.

Be Well All,

Dredd

No offense taken Captain. Any worthwhile suggestions, and ideas of how to implement them, are always welcome. So, we thank you for the suggestions.

The search key is currently down since it was hammering Gibby's server, and in the spirit of keeping the site moving faster, we figured it better for now to take it out. Gibby's working on restoring the functionality.

Again, good suggestions, and thanks!

Yes, I also miss having many of the features found in phpBB or Ikon boards. I even suggested a simple thing as adding a Quote feature under the Suggestions box, but was told No and was laughed at. Hope no one wonders why there are no suggestions in there

I'm still thinking that the Quote option is good...

I actually coded 75% of this site myself, and even while some of the others are good, I would loose a big incentive for me with changing the forums.

A ) The "show posts from last X days".
Paging-> Sounds like a great idea! Though I need time to code it...

B ) "Search" function turned off.
I'm occasionally testing it, and it is still timing out... I need to do some functionality that cleans out old posts though, so I'll propably archive the very old posts, and that means a lot of people loosing a lot of post-counts... :/

C ) "New Posts" icon not accurate.
Actually when you enter the site, a time is set. The next time you visit, all the posts from the time you last ENTERED the forum are shown as new...

D ) "Show X posts per page" doesn't seem to work.
I know - doesn't work... Cookie issue

E ) No "jump to page X" option.
Hmm... ok - though it will not make the server any quicker

F ) No "hide email from other users" option.
OK - I'll add it to my 2 doos...

G ) "Usergroups"
It may be nice to offer a "Usergroups" feature.
I'll check it out...

H ) Private Messages
Perhaps it would be nice to also offer this feature?
OK...

We already have a quote option. The syntax is excatly the way most other webiste have them set. This one is just a manual event like the rest in the forum codes you see to the left of every post before you post it. Clear as mud?

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it....anonymous

I would never laugh at someone with a new idea, that;s grounds for a public flogging.

I'm begging you...

Please have the thread folder icon change after you have posted in it. Make it anything. A star, a different color, a big "X" over the folder icon. Just something to make them stand out when I'm scrolling down the page. I cannot even guess how many questions I've posted on a Friday, but then when I check it on Monday there is NO way to find the thread without looking for a long time. With the number of posts increasing each day, it is becoming nearly impossible to keep track of your old posts. Thank you for your time and openness to forum improvements.

Stinger, but it would be a lot easier if there was a quote button above each post. If you click the Quote button, it would automatically take you to a reply screen with the post in quoted tags and identifying the original poster. This would be a lot faster than copying, hitting reply, pasting, then putting in quote tags and stating who the original poster was.

I am familiar with how it works, and I stated that in my post in the Suggestion Forum. I just went to copy the link for you so you could read how I worded it, but I guess someone decided to delete my suggestion, because it is no longer there. So why have a Suggestion Box if the posts get deleted?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 6:01 pm

@spartan, I agree with you it would be easier, But I believe the discussion was it did not even exist when in fact it does.

RevRaz, I found it right here . Not deleted, just dropped down from an active thread that's all. I don't believe Wiz was Laughing My *ss Off, I believe that reads closer to In My (blank) Opinion. That looks like an "I" to me, not an "L" in the 1st character.

This forum has some common ancestor with the Snitz Forums.

I've made a preliminary test with some forums here here. What do you say? Should I try to get converted to that version instead?

I'm wavering... I'm admittedly "old school" but I'm flexible too.

I like the new forums. They would be a lot better if the folder icon changed to show that I posted in it

Barbig & Boscoe,

Thank you for taking my posting as it was intended, and for your very diplomatic nature on the subject.

I have interacted with many other admins on the net which did not take suggestions so well, and with such fine demeanor.

I salute you.

Yeah, for what it's worth, I think the same thing about this forum. I have no idea what it takes to maintain a forum, so I'm not being critical here, but just compared to other forums I visit (Bioware's NeverWinter Nights, Hegemonia's official forum, are the most recent ones) this forum is the most lacking in features, such as those listed above, than any other forum I go to.

I guess I'm just spoiled?
