When game ends?

What happens when you finish the last mission? do you get to continue on the game forever and ever? or do they take you to the credits and watch an ending movie... ? What do you guys usually do? save before the last mission.. finish the last mission.. load from it and then stop playing with the Liberty (thats what so far the story as been about to me) and do whatever you want?
sorry if someone already asked this question before, but i tried using the serach option, but it didnt work.

After you finish the last mission, you are free to do whatever you want. Simple as that.

I finsihed the game and I didn't even get credits, it just had a ending cutscene and put me back on planet manhatten and I am now able to go to any system and explore and trade or do what ever i want......there are a few exceptions......some of the mission activated areas are locked and you can't go there again.....like the jump hole to the alaska system in new york system.....anyway, I'm playing mulitplayer online now, so I'll see where that'll take me.........
