It's not just free exploring that can be rough. Some storyline missons may be very tough, especially if you're flying a cargo ship. On some missions with larger battles, I just flew away a bit and waited for things to clear up. If I charged into combat I had to use bots and sheilds almost continously since for some reason almost all enemy fire was targeted at me (ignoring my allies). A few times I noticed my wingmen flying totally crappy ships, yet they were barely damaged while I was fighting for my life, having to reload saves because I had used too many bots/shields at a previous stage.

Yeah ive gotten better at this game and the free exploring isnt so big a problem for me anymore, but I still have one big problem with this game, which Lim mentioned above. Its that in the campaign (which i beat, but it wasnt so much fun as it could have been because of this reason) every single enemy ship concentrated all of their fire on you. They never, ever shoot at your allies, which i think is totally unrealistic and even more frustrating. sometimes i had to just turn my cruise engines on and fly around in circles like a dumbass and let my wingmen shoot away at the enemy (whom were still only shooting at me)

There are certainly a few places in the story missions where avoiding the early furball of combat is wise. While I'm not sure I agree that EVERY ship concentrates on you, there does seem to be a very high percentage that "have your number". On the other hand, thier shields regenerate at a rate of 1 and they never use shield bats or nanobots....IMO, it balances out.

The AI is very bad at dealing with asteroid fields as well, you might do better traveling through them.

Learn to use the LEFT-RIGHT buttons, the afterburner AND the reverse key. I mapped them all to my keypad like a FPS.

Map the "tractor all" button to the keypad as well and tap it after your current target blows. You will get nanobots and shield batteries from many dead enemys.

Use your decoys, they are cheaper than shield batterys.

Go head-on with an enemy when you can, blast down his shields and launch a missle at the last minute which he can't avoid.

Avoid the Single Player campaign whenever you can and make some easy money. You'll need it later...

I finished the campaine over the weekend. I found that once you reach the order missions you buy the order heavy fighter and this gives you all the money you need as the order ship is cheap and the one you sell is not.

I haven't seen the Titan ship for sale anywhere, but I am only level 24 and haven't started exploring yet.

Learning to use thrustes is a must because during the campaine you will not live long without this skill. In some of the larger battles it is safer just to stay in hyper speed to avoid being destroyed; a handy tactic when you have run out of shield batteries and you run into a hudred or so of your adoring fans.

I think I'm the only one who does this, but at lower levels I actually switch shield types for the upcoming enemies. That and of course my impeccable flying skills

you cant buy a titan at level 24 anyways. I just bought a centurion and its actually kind of cool. now im gonna save up for an eagle.
