What I don''t like about Freelancer

I just played the demo, so I got none of the advanced ships or guns or anything, I'm just talking about what I've seen (I guess the feeling won't change much later on...)

It's so silly. You click the Bar Icon, click the "Get Job" Icon, click the "Take off" Icon, left click and drag until crosshair is over purple diamond, press Shift+W, wait, repeat if necessary. Check on hostile ships from time to time. If you see anything red, press R. Then drag mouse until crosshair is on enemy ship. Click the vector help crosshair until enemy is dead. If he gets out of your FOV, move mouse after red arrow. Then press R again. Repeat if necessary. Then get back to station.

My point is: The missions are pointless. The fights are pointless. You basically try to hover your mouse above the vector aim thing and click either one or both mouse buttons (depending on if you have free or mouse flight on).

That sucks. I think I won't buy it...

Um, that's how you play most solo-character, action/RPG games. And all those "pointless" missions get you money to gain levels and buy equipment, just like the aforementioned genre. What's so bad about it this time?

Hmmm...not sure how to comment on this one. All I can say is, I disagree (respectfully), but if it's not what you're looking for I'm sure there are other games that'll suit your interests better.

I suppose I think configuring your ship, weapons, what missions you take, etc. is part of the fun for me, as is the exploration factor of the huge world.

I also can't say I see a huge difference from most more simulation type games. I mean...when you think about it, in those you move the joystick until the crosshair is over an enemy and press the trigger to shoot it. Yes, there's more to it, but there's more to Freelancer too.

Yes, it's got an autopilot aspect, but I find that feature neat for running waypoints, and you can always choose to fly manually and freely wherever too if you like that better. (Did you realize you can switch to free flight?)

(BTW, it's been said several times the combat gets much more intense in the full version, so some strategy will need to be involved).

To each his own, and if Freelancer doesn't grow on you, I hope you find another game soon to your liking.

Well of course it's possible that there is tactics or strategy involved in the full version. By the way I don't even own a joystick and I really liked Privateer 2. Those Privateer fights were NOT just clicking the vector aim help!
Weapon configuration: Well I guess that's just buying new weapons (Whatever - Laser based stuff Mk10000) and such. Exploring isn't really fun in this game for me. I liked exploring in let's say Diablo or Ultima Online, and there you had more complicated battles (and yes, I think Whirlwinding a group of enemies is more complicated than clicking red crosses in Freelancer).

Even those 2D Shooters (Tyrian, Raptor) were more fun :-/

Perhaps it's just not my kind of game

The weapons also have more depth then you're implying. They work better on certain shields, so a laser based weapon with X power could be better than a tachyon based weapon with the same power.

You seem to have an oversimplified view of the game. It's an easy game to play, but it's not THAT simple. And I have no words that express my confusion about your Diablo comment =/

I think this game needs the ability to take several missions at once. If I am to define one thing I dislike about Freelancer, it's the mission dicipline. If you don't move directly to mission, you're 'retreating'. I wonder what made DA implement this.

Yeah - just sounds like it isn't your type of game. Honestly, exploration is half (maybe more) the fun in a title like this, and if it's not something that is fun for you, you'd probably be better with another title. I still can't say I can see how it's that much more simple compared to other games, but I respect your viewpoint . I think you would have been happier if they made it more simlike from the sounds of it.

First person shooters... lol.

Start with pistol. Shoot low level enemies and get ammo and maybe a better gun. Find key. Open door. Go to exit.

Later: Defeat boss.

Go play the Sims or BarbieDoll online. You are not seeing the real attraction of Freelancer.

the battles get A LOT harder later on. at my current point in the game an average battle consist of around 8-10 veteran enemy fighters and sometimes gun platforms or small stations, most likely with the right kind of gun against my type of shield, stinger missiles and mines. every time i try to just keep the targetting reticule on the lead indicator of the enemy ship i end up getting shot at by the rest of the enemy squad and watch my 1800 shield unit points get blasted away in seconds.

true, getting missions get tedious and single player might lose its appeal sooner or later, but multiplayer is excellent. as in all multiplayer games, fighting other people online or going on missions with them is where the replay value really lies.

Yeap, having the ability to take multiple missions would be nice.

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 2:55 am

Or a little more complex missions. I don't just want harder enemies, it would be nice to have something to do besides killing ships. Even the Kill-All-Torpedos-Missions in Starlancer were cool!

Well I bought a Javelin Missile Launcher and now it's a little more fun
Missiles rock.

I like the autopilot feature. It's brilliant when u get jumped in ya freighter by baddies... u quickly set ya ship to keep running on auto, throw yaself into turret mode, and then fight a running battle; guns blazing behind ya, dropping mines like crazy... it's freaken AWESOME when u reach a trade lane just as ya hull begins to fail. Cool.

I don't think I could ever disagree more with a post wow. Well to each his own, sorry you couldn't see the greatness of this game...don't see how it's hard to miss.

I like Freelancer. Don't get me wrong, I've barely gone as far as think about playing another game since I got it, much less played anything else. The battles are good, I think. They're simple in the beginning, as should be; you don't send a newbie to an intense battle with skilled foes in good ships.
However, the thing that REALLY bothers me, (Except for my reboot-on-jumpgate issue, which I hope to resolve) is that all ships are equally fast, and there's no fuel. Come on, this is truly silly.. You should be able to buy thrusters that grant your ship more velocity, uses less fuel, and equally importantly, you should need to fuel. The idea of a very high level LF moving exactly as fast as a liberty freighter is just ridiculous. If you, by now, think that I'm trying to shoot down the game, read the first two sentences of this post =)
Peace
