question about jump gates?

i have just started playin freelancer and like it,it seems very similar to elite final frontier i used to play.
anyway my question if someone could try answering pls,i keep coming across jumpgates and it says access denied,so i cant jump to other systems.if i follow the storyline i have found 2 working jump gates that it allows me to use,but others i find still say access denied.is there something im doing wrong or do they open at a certain time?this seems silly if like i do,you prefer to not follow storyline.
any help appreciated.

Welcome Steve!

You do need to get through at least the first 4 storyline missions to unlock gates in single player, but you don't need to finish all of them. Sounds like you're stuck in Liberty space, so play a few more of the storylines and the gates will open up.

Also, you could try multiplayer. There's no storyline there, but be warned that taking the intial ship outside of Liberty could be hazardous to your health!

thxs for the reply,im actually out of liberty in sp,i got chased out with juno or wotever her name is,but i havent tried any more gates since i got chased into this new area called bretonia i think.so i will try,thxs.
a1 other thing is it me or is it a bit too similar to elite final frontier,from the news bits,the job boards and even the naming of loads of the planets is the same???
i miss elite i loved it,but this more than makes up for that.
