How do you join a faction?!?

How do you join a faction?!?

How do you join a faction and have their tag in your name?? I've noticed that everyone starts in the Navy and has Navy tag next to their name until they do certain things which may or may not make them lose the tag. Also I noticed that the Liberty Navy text is flashing when I'm a member with them. What I would like to know is how the heck do you join another faction????

I've been trying to join the Rogues to have Rogue tag in my name to no avail. I did over 40 missions and nothing happened. I became hostile to all their enemies and friends with all their friends, nothing happened. I've pretty much given up and believe that its not possible to join any faction. Does anyone know if it is possible and HOW can you join a faction and have their tag in your name???????????? =(

You don't join them. You're a Freelancer. A mercenary. Factions pay you per mission, not monthly. They don't trust you enough to actually exist in their structure. To them, you are expendable.

But for role playing purposes joining factions would be great =(

I mean even in the advertisements they made they showed different professions like merchants, bounty hunters and red hessians for example!!

You can work for any faction you want and even make them so friendly they will help you out in combat if they are passing by. You can't be an "official" Red Hessian, Outcast, or Lane Hacker because that would totally defeat the purpose of the game...it's called Freelancer for a reason.

BTW, I am having a blast being as friendly as can possibly be with the Red Hessians, Outcasts and Lane Hackers and doing all the missions for them. Pirating is much more fun than being a peace keeper, and you get access to better ships too

OK then does anyone know what's the point of you starting out in the Navy and having the Navy tag in your name when you begin??? You're a freelancer. Surely you're not IN the navy but they still have the tag on everyones name when they begin.

I'm beginning to think that joining factions was a feature that was dropped later on. Why would they have starting players in the Navy faction otherwise? *Sigh* guess its something to look out for in a patch... or perhaps an expansion.

Why are you so obsessed with a name tag?

Post Fri Mar 07, 2003 4:40 pm

well, even though the faction tag might be irrelevant to the actual gameplay, fallout's got a point with why bother putting the "Navy" tag on your ship in the first place. i would personally love to have the bounty hunter tag in front of my name so i can live out my dreams of being boba fett (if i squint hard enough at my barracuda i swear it looks like slave I, ha ha).

somewhat related is that i think it'd be really cool if there was some kinda reputation label depending on your actions. for example, like "trader", "renegade", or "peacekeeper". if i'm taking out outlaw battleships, i want to get recognized for that! again, totally irrelevant to the primary gameplay, but a little something that would flesh out things more and perhaps give you a little something more to make an already addictive game more addictive. plus, it would help differentiate your character from the thousands of other trents flying around in space.

Why are you so obsessed with a name tag?

Why do they advertise this as an "RPG"?
Why do some players have "Outcast", "Rogue", and "Navy" before thier names, put there BY THE GAME?
Why get down on a person for asking how to achieve something IN the game?

I too would like to know what stipulations there are for gaining certain "tags".
So far I have heard that it depends on whom you have the BEST reputaion with...but that doesn't seem to hold true.
So, my next experiment will be to get the best reputaion with my "goal group", and have all their allies as the next highest reputaion levels.

But, I HATE having "Navy" in front of my name!
I don't wanna be a SQUID!!! LOL!

Perhaps somebody from DA, whom it has been said read these forums, will now start answering some of these questions now that the game is released and there should be no more reasons to keep everything regarding it and it's workings "secret" any longer.
At least we can hope!

Fly well,

Perhaps....and just perhaps mind you since I am not infront of my game..it has something to do with the MP settings. I remember that in another M$ game, Mechwarrior, you could alter appearance, callsign etc. As I said I am not in front of my box so I cant check it myself.

Besides the obvious Role Playing elements of having a name tag it would also allow players to distinguish other players easier. For example I come out of a trade lane and encounter several people. IF these people had tags like "Bounty Hunter" or "Police" or "Rogue" then I would be able to tell better who's my friend or foe. Also this would make finding like-minded players to join with easier as you would immediately tell from their tag and say "Oh, I'm in that profession, lets team up".

Another helpful thing would be to see the tag in the Player list. For example: You are a "Bounty Hunter" and see someone with the "Gaian" tag in the player list operating in the New London system. You may then want to travel to the said system and begin hunting him/her down. The factions would add a whole new dimension to the game, I do hope it is possible to join one or will be made possible in the future =(

That's strange. I thought being green to outcasts and red to navy fixes this problem.

I just returned from a game where I was starting a pirate career with another person. After killing several innocents the faction of my team mate changed from Navy to DSE (Deep Space Engineering). No idea what triggered this shift of Faction but it seems to be possible to join Factions. If anybody has discovered anything that may even leed to how to join a certain faction please post your knowledge here and perhaps we can figure out a way on how it works. I wish the Freelancer game manual had more info than the obvious! =(

Its probably possible to edit some of the game files to change the faction name if u can run a memory tracker when u see someone change faction, and see which parts of the game change - may take a while to track tho

My guess is that the faction that you're friendliest with becames your name tag.

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 2:40 pm

Probably, but I got it so there was no faction tag on me once - maybe there were multiple factions really liking me? This is a very interesting topic
