First of all I have played the merchandise beta and loved it. I have not been addicted to a game like this ever, and I have been playing PC games since before the Commodore 64 (yes there are hills younger than me.) What erks me is when a publisher fails to recognize the quality of a game and just ships it with a bare minimum of contents. Here you get a manual and a cardboard CD holder. That is it. The manual is nice but very small. No discussions of the history of the factions, story of the bases, etc. I know finding out some yourself is part of the game, but something more substantial would have pulled you into the game more. No card listing the controls and hot keys. And no jewel case for the CD. They really should be ashamed of this. I guess Microsoft is really strapped for cash so Bill can afford a modest lifestyle, but the boy needs to cut corners elsewhere; maybe sell some of the third world counties that he owns before shortchanging such a quality title. Hopefully some enterprising fan with much more time and talent than myself will create downloads to add to this, because clearly Microsoft does not have the resources to devote to such a worthy cause. Still you should buy the game anyway.

I, too, was disappointed with the packaging, but it's how Microsoft publishes all of their games. Atleast the manual is in color.

I think the most stuff that Microsoft has included with their games was, Mechwarrior. But that has been about it.

There is some sort of environmental value to using less resources (that typically get tossed) and non-plastic cases..

Look, not trying to hug a tree here.. just saying.

I do not like the small manual however. I enjoy reading them in the.. well you know where most of us read them

Anyhow.. it seems to be a trend that spans far beyond M$

i think cfs takes the cake with like a 300 page manual

Better than cfs3 where all the instructions are on the cd so you have to read them on the pc!!

I could not care less about the contents of the box...the cd is good and has all the content I want! If you played the demo very much...you really do not need a manual...the game is that easy to learn and play. Thanks to a great interface DA created.

i like the manual the way it is... the rest of the info you can read in your nueral net as you explore...

I think it is also cool that they are not wasting paper or other materials in the packaging. There is too much waste in the world as is (yes, I am a tree hugging, salmon saving leftist liberal)

If you want a card of the controls just make a color copy of pages 20 and 21.

I felt it was cheap of them not to put it in a jewel case or a folding cardboard case (ala Tachyon: The Fringe).

Lol!..a good one.

On the jewel case note...they cost like 50 cents a piece. So if you want a jewel case for your Freelancer cd ( which I do )...go buy one and stop complaining.

eating beef is good for you.

Sounds to me like the publisher cut on expenses to cover up for the delayed release... so it might also be a correct assumption that their profit margin on this game will be rather small unless very very many people buy it at it's initial retail price.
... so would that follow that financing an update for it will be out of the question for a rather long time?

Hope the European box will have more content than the American. Maybe a little ship or a trent figure will do the trick. What about a Freelancer sticker. Way cooool.

Sounds good that the manual are in colors.

What is this trend with not giving real plastic jewel cases? There's no problem with the environment - I don't throw them out! The little dinky cardboard ones aren't very sturdy and some actually scratch the CD. My Planescape: Torment CDs were almost completely ruined by the cardboard case, grrr.
