What use are millions of credits?

firstly I'll say that I've only played the demo and that finished rather rapidly on tractoring something into my cargo bay , no idea what but must have been reasonably expensive as my net worth wasn't particularly high before this. I know I can use the hacks to play longer etc but thats not what this is about.

From my limited experience of Freelancer so far, I've seen that its relatively easy to make money and no doubt once you;ve bought a decent size frieghter, trading will be relatively easy once decent trade route have been found. So here is my question.

what can you do with all these credits? Everything I have seen in the game appears to be reasonably cheap (even ships). You can only buy one ship so presumably upgrading to the best fighter/freighter is a one off cost. Again most of the equipment you only need to buy once (unless it can be destroyed?).

Anyone understand what I'm going on about?

You could spend it on bribes. You get people (found at bars) to improve your rep with a specific faction (or whatever), but it's usually quite expensive. The ones I saw were about 70-80k...but if you're talking about Millions, it probably won't make much difference.

However, it could compensate for only owning 1 ship at a time. Basically, when you want to change your ship, you just buy the one you want...but with money not baing a factor, it's like you're just picking it up.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm presuming that you wouldn't need to bribe (or perhaps wouldn't be able to) factions very often. Would seem a big strange that you can continually attack Rogues and then when you need something from them, simply bribe someone to get a clean rating. Wouldn't they get wise to this after the first couple of times......?

As for buying other ships. I think if they were really expensive then it would make this more realistic. The prices I saw in the demo were relatively low, a few 10's k credits. Are they top level ships far more expensive, like 500,000?

I know the 'technically' bigger ship is the titan which is like 750k - the Sabre(which is better) is a little less expensive - but all in all, yes they get expensive

The prices for the ships go up considerably in the different systems. I believe the most expensive one is around $680,000.00. While having a good ship will help though, it won't help you if you can't fly it well.

bribes can I guess go up to about 200k, most I payed was 150k, maybe thats the max aswell, but spending in end game much on bribes is anyway stupid, for the amount you get bonus for one faction, your faction status will go down for those that are enemys of them, so bribes are only good to balance your faction status faster, or if you really want to go to some station that is atm hostile to you. (like my little one for those corsairs, cause I wantet to visit crete and tripoli, damn intersting stuff in the news, I could bet that this stuff will be in the expansion)

and ships well, once you have the first million, and your ship, you never ever really need money, just kill something if you like, tractor the cargo, sell it somewhere, you can do this on your way. while exploring, you will aswell tractor in a good amount of weapon, which can alone make easly 100k profit, add anout 50-100k for the cargo, and that was just one 10 minutes trip to the next system

once your in high end gameplay, there is not much content left, not much to do with your money, and getting into the high end area is damn easy aswell with just some hours of (borning cause repitiv) trading.

What I really personaly enjoy atm is getting mates to omicron theta, its damn fun, to take a route in hostile space with some lowbie and break with him to theta thru.
you have there really to be fast, kill the enemys, give him cover, get your ship between the enemy and him, taking shots, direkt him, look in battle at the map to tell him where to next, and, and, and

great fun, though it takes that way just about 2 hours till someone from level 1 is maxed out. with all weapons, best ship, and at at least crete or malta. (even shorter if he decide that he wants a sabre, cause it so easy to access)

I think the idea of getting a lot of money allows you to switch ships frequently. Need a quick, agile ship? Buy a light fighter and play with it for a while. Want do do some heavy trading? Buy a freighter. Getting the Saber or the Titan does not nessicarily mean it's the end of the fun. If you got that far as a bounty hunter, try ruining your rep and taking on a few police ships to become a pirate for a while (You'll spend a lot of money on bribe!)

I don't think that getting the 'best' ship and the 'best' weapons will mean the end of the fun in the game. I intend to play until there is nothing new to discover and I get bored of it - just like any other game. I don't intend to play it forever.

Yeah ship's arent too expensive but this is not E&B eaither were your stuck with the sameone over and over! Their's other things you can use your money for but the main thing is going around blowing stuff into space dust! Anyway Happy Hunting!

Thanks for all the replies. I did realise that there was porbably much more to spend money on in the full game, and as I said my exposure to FL is only from my limited time on the demo. I'll try unlocking the other ships and the money thing as I can see the potential here.

Spend any amount of time at all in the Borderworlds and it gets expensive. Repairs appraoching 100k per fight, very little loot to extract from cargo ships, the factions are much tougher than in the realive calm of the houese home systems.

Of course this is only if you're not cheating with any "enhancements" that make this whole concept moot.

Earning millions by playing the game as it was designed takes a lot longer than a few hours.

Stinger

The only reason I wanted to change the ships and money thing was to gain a real appreciation of what FL is about. In the one demo game I played, I picked something up after a fight, which must have been reasonably valuable, and that ended it. I thought the money hack thing just allowed you to play the demo for longer by raising the amount of cash required to become lvl 2?

Stinger thats bs, once you have a ship to spend a easy time in the border worlds (hammerhead is minimun I guess, better one of the ueber ships) the loot make for any repairs you could have.

go out just for 10 minutes from omicron theta, kill some titants, come back repair the loot, and sell it than for 100k, about 50k for the weapons and another 50 I guess for consumer goods

and anyway those repair costs you speak of are the repair costs of the LOOT, you do not much dmg on your own eagle anyway, its not like the game would have something that could stop an average pilot in a ueber eagle

and I would really want to know, what you mean with your last sentence?
Playing the game as it has been designed? Are you telling me using those trade routes and ueber stuff that is in the game, was never ment to be used?
If so, I suggest we just remove those data from the game, at best with the next patch.
Sure it get rough in an anubis fighter in the border worlds, sure its hard to fight your way with a hammerhead against outcast, corsairs and bountyhunters at the same time, but ffs even that is possible, so enlight me how the game should be played
I guess we should get all freighters and doing fighting missions at freeport 9, now THAT would be a challenge
