Freighter got more to put weapons,mines,missles,sheild and cargo.etc
More weapons ports means you can "snipes" rookies fighter.

Freighter are big and easy enemy target but you know its for the Merchant/Miners. $$$
But I'm not sure there's a wingman for hire just in case?
You can use nanobots,batteries to repair hull and sheild
And sure the mines and countermeasure can help you against
missles and torpedoes.
