RFC - Why no roll?

The flight system is nice and has a "highly advanced" feel to it - clickable navigation and so on... and since there appears to be full freedom in movement by strafing (only sideways though), why isn't there the ability to roll your craft?

It looks as if the entries are on the screen but no keys associated with them. I haven't tried to map any nonstandard keys but it may be worth a go

I can't be sure, because of the speed of combat, but in 3rd person it appears that your ship rolls into sharp turns, where you actually come out of the turn inverted. It's much harder to tell in 1st person (which I prefer) But the manuverablity of the craft is very exaggerated, so I don't think rolls need to be implemented.

Rolling is not required in Freelancer combat, you move the same speed in every direction so rolling would just be a gimmick and of no real value.

I asked this question fairly recently too. There is an auto-leveling feature, a bit like the one in descent. This works because although the game is set in space, there is a preserved sense of orientation (ie everything's more or less on the same plane - it would be impossible to use a map otherwise). Because of this, there isn't the need to roll.

But... but... but I want to roll (on) my own!
Several manoeuvres require rolling and this is a space sim after all - in space you can move in any possible direction. :/
Granted in, for example, Elite all you could do was roll and pitch, but still - since FL boasts all this advanced things (and is a tad larger than Elite), why not be able to roll at will as well? And what about vertical strafing?

FL may be a lot of things better then Elite, but larger ?
"and is a tad larger than Elite"

I think not

I was referring to file size

Well, now how many blasted maneuvering thrusters do you want! Perhaps they figured there wouldn't realistically be enough room in a standard fighter to fit verticle and roll thrusters... works for me. In FL, you REALLY don't need to roll. Some games it's valid, but in FL, I totally agree w/ the devs on this one... no need.

But I'm no good with a bong! I want to roll!
Well - anyhow, I guess it'll just be something to get used to. No amount of bitching about it from me could get it in the game...
