Q for anyone who has played more than the demo

A simple question.

How much of the single player campaign do you have to complete in order to open up all of the systems ?

I was looking forward to an open-ended game where I could ignore the main storyline, and just do my own thing. I have passed the first mission in the demo, and explored a bit, but a friend tells me that the system gates etc., are locked down until opened within certain missions in the SP campaign.

Is this true ?? Would I be able to just play the first mission, and then explore ALL of the systems of my own accord, or will I be railroaded into completing the SP campaign just to do my own thing ?

I think about the third mission... though you could also select to run the MP Server locally, and just go out and explore!

Does the FPL demo allow you to run a server ?
