Your Real View on FREELANCER

G'day Everyone,
I,ve Been drooling over the screenshots, videos, and th rhineland combat avi for a while now and i was wondering what is it actully like. i would like to know what people really think about it

Post Mon Feb 24, 2003 5:11 am

To drive this offtopic in a single post, I think some of the rabid fanbois here need to throttle down and realize that not everyone here is going to find Freelancer the be-all end-all of space sims, and that not everyone coming here is going to be gushing over with effuvescent praise. Anyone who dares to voice flaws gets (in most threads) shouted down because they're not appreciating it, haven't spent enough time exploring the ass end of nowhere, the real game is in the multiplay, etc etc ad nauseum. Great way to get the community going.

Do you want visitors who at least remotely resemble the gaming public - which includes those who love the game and those who have problems with it, or you do want a small group of blinkered nutbars who scream "LOVE FREELANCER OR DIE!" at every new arrival? I know which I'd rather visit. And so far, some of the members here are doing a damn good job of pushing it towards the latter.

Rant off.

Wow like he said, driving it off topic on the first reply. I don't have a problem with people's opinion about the game. I have a problem with people that have obtained the game in an illegal way. 'nuff said.

Now, back on topic. I don't know what screenshots you have seen or what videos, but I prefer to fly in the first person view with cockpit struts on. Seems more like a sim to me that way. I enjoy the game more the more I get into it. The systems are very nice too look at and have their own unique features. The "whoa cool!" factor is still there after over 30 hours of play. The other day I saw a ringed planet in the distance and flew to it to check it out. Flew through the rings and everything. The combat is fun. The game tends to draw me in and I lose hours at a time.

As a little disclaimer. The things I described, such as the ringed planet are not in the demo, at least I don't think they are. I have been playing the PR beta for the past week. I just don't wish to have people accusing me of having a warez version of the game.

All im after is peoples opinon on the game good, bad, great, and or sad (haha)
i dont want to get into a large political debate over it, all i want is input from people who've played the demo or the beta would that be so hard??!
EDIT
Thanks shark747

I enjoyed the demo, but I'm waiting until I get my hands on the full version before passing final judgment. The reason is because I'm leaning slightly towards the disappointed side, but I think that's just because the ships and items (and places) we actually have access to are fairly limited in the demo.

Ask me again in about a week.

Stormtrooper Tactics 101: Okay class, repeat after me. "There he is! Blast em!" Very good.

In other news, it's coming out at a bad time, both because MOO3 will be out at the same time as well as the fact that I have field trips, essays and projects to do.

I'll hold off on further commentary until I play the full game and not the demo.

Hold on, i know this will sound stupid but what's MOO3

Master of Orion 3. I am a big fan of the first Master of Orion game..but MOO3 will not be any competition for Freelancer for me. You talk about a game that is not true to the original....I am getting off the subject here ..sorry TLR.

Read the previews on a lot of the gaming sites listed on the home page here at TLR about Freelancer and play the demo and decide for yourslef if it is the game you want. Just do not pay any attention to those so called reviewers who have illegal copies of Freelancer and remember the reviewers of the demo are talking about a "demo". With a lot of features disabled.

First of all, Freelancer is NOT a space sim. It's more like a space RPG or space adventure game. Second Freelancer is not better or worse than Privateer in name of gameplay. If you liked Privateer than that's a good thing. If you wanted more than Privateer, your going to be seriousely disapointed.

Freelancer is the best space sim ive ever played, and a great rpg all bundled nicely into one game, if you work full time, you might loose your job if you buy freelancer, i did

first of all, this kind of game is rare. they maybe come twice a decade.

so of course, there's much feelings and different opions about freelancer.

the game has a storyline. it contains missions and scenarios you
have to complete in order to proceed in the game.
but between the missions, there's a open wide area you could
get totally lost in. there's over 50 different systems where
you can go. with planets and bases to visit.
and there's as many factions you can be friend or foe with.

and after the campaign is over, when you finished the game,
you end up at level 18 (i think). and there's still all those
systems and bases to discover.

in short, it means that you have about 100-200 hours
of playing before you maybe get tired of the game.

plus there's these entusiatics who make their own
modifications of the game...

as elite types of games go,.. i quite enjoyed it,.. as long as every 1 was running the same game that is,, best of type since x-beyond the frontier,. but that had no multiplayer option,. but they are fixing that now with x online,. (under development) which is going to be a a pay monthly thing,

In general, this game is quite well done, both content and stability wise. However it is not without its faults (such as the massive amount of things you can exploit in MP and the utterly stupid jump gate queue AI) but overall I reckon I got my money's worth and I'd say this game is above average.
