Where is the "do what you want" aspect of the game

First of all I have not played the full game, just the demo. But from various boards, I found out the following:

You start out with very little money and no ship.
You are forced to work for the Police (or whatever their name is) to get more money. But in the process you piss off the smugglers and the rest of the fringe factions.

So what I'm wondering is, where does the "do what you want" or "not having to follow a storyline" come in? Since you've pissed off all the other factions, how are you supposed to do anything else except work for the police?

The demo has me hooked, so I'm going to buy it regardless. I was just hoping someone could answer my questions.

Dang, I had a huge response typed up but it never made it. Basically to sum it up.

Total freedom in mutiplayer. Start with wimpy ship and $1000 and do as you please from there.

On the factions. The number of factions in liberty doesnt even come close to the amount that is in the entire game. As you move into new areas, factions will be added to your list. Some hostile, some friendly, the rest are neutral. Your relationship with each faction is up to you. Keep in mind that your actions have consequences.

Another way to get a faction on your side is the good ole bribe. They usually take a decent amount of money and they do come with consequnces. Some bribes may cause your standing with other factions to decrease.

If you don't want to play online but want the freedom of multiplayer just start your own server and make it inaccessable to the internet. The game runs just fine with the server in the background. Glad you like the demo.

You do one mission for the Liberty Security Force and piss off one faction in the process, the Liberty Rouges. You semi-piss off the factions that are allied to the Rouges, but you can easily charm your way back into thier good graces by doing a few missions for them. As for the Rouges, they are small fry but if you really want them to love you again, bribe someone to hack your reputation with them.

Remember, you have to do the first missions, then you can decline the rest of the Liberty missions until Juni asks you to do another one. After 4 or 5 missions for liberty Police you can do anything you want. You can improve your rating with the Smugglers by bribes. And as being said before, try multiplayer
