Demo question: HOW do you mine?

Got the demo, found an asteroid field, also tried in the debirs field.....it says that to mine you simply shoot the "mineable" thing then hit tractor(b).......

Well the debris field and the asteroid field both show as mineable but I have had NO luck trying to mine from them-help!

shoot at the asteroids, when they break up they might release minerals, and they might not.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

Yeah, I have got the same issue - debris field is shown to be minable, but isn't. At least it works somehow different than just by shooting on the debris....

You have to shoot at the smaller ones that move. They're the ones that break up if you shoot them once. The others just stay there if you shoot them.

REALLY small ones? Does the targeting recticle change(does for me on the really small ones) but if I hit B nothing happens before or after I shoot em.

The ones where your cursor will turn white. Shoot them, and a good will come out some of the time. Just keep shooting until you get a full load.

I've NEVER seen anything I can tractor come out of those-they are fairly small right?

@Lach,

Yes the things you can mine are small. Just keep at it, you'll find on average about 1 in 7 or so will release some goodies.

The ones in the debris fields look like tumbling beer kegs. The ones in the ice clouds look like spiky mines (scared the crap out of me when I first saw them!). The ones in the ice fields that don't have the "misty" characteristic, and the ones in the asteriod fields just look like rocks.

Move fairly slowly, and you'll see them moving at a different rate than the big pieces. There are some *really* small pieces that move at the same rate as the minable ones, but those aren't the ones you want. You'll see your targeting reticule change when you pass over a minable one, and then you'll know what they look like.

One piece of advice: Read information in your maps, and listen to rumors to find out where the bad guys tend to hang out. Also look at patrol routes on the nav maps and figure out which ones are for the "good guys" so that if you get jumped, you have a chance of getting some help. It also wouldn't hurt to make a player-made waypoint back to the nearest trade lane or weapon platform before you start mining, so you know which direction to run in when you get jumped (and you *will* get jumped)

Is there a point to mining?
All I've found so far are scrap metal and water which are worthless.

If you have a freighter, I imagine mining would be quite lucrative.

It's not entirely worth it, but later fields have better minerals - silve and copper are pretty good. There might be other fields with better stuff, but I've never seen them.

In the system Omega-11 it says you can mine diamonds, now thats got to be worth it!

Well, mining water is perfectly good if you know where to sell it. Same as with other commodities. If you know a great trade route, you can make tens of thousands of dollars relatively quickly.

I'm sure you can sell it for a lot at some places but it must be very cheap on some planets.
