XP Problems with Marketing Beta

No problems with the PR beta here, runs fine on both my desktop and laptop. Both using Win 2000 SP3 DX9

Post Wed Feb 19, 2003 5:43 pm

I am running it on XP Pro with no problems at all.

Some things you may want to watch for though is software and hardware conpatibility. Mainly hardware. If you have a sound or video card that is not totally XP compatible it may cause problems. For example my modem does not have XP drivers so I used 2000 drivers and whil it works most of the time some times when I disconnect from the internet my PC does a hard crash. I need a new modem. Lucky for me it does not hapen when I am playing online games.

I agree with Boscoe's suggestion to, that could help a lot.

that actually sp1 is just a piracy fix. better off and going to the windows update site and just dling all the patches and ignorin sp1.

Very unwise advice. SP1 is much more than a piracy fix, it's shores upa lot of security holes in the OS as well. Unfortunately, if you have WinXP and you didn't actually buy it, then you get what you deserve IMHO.

But a registered copy, keep it updated with the Window Update and if then it crashes, you've got a leg to stand on for complaining. Until then, I can't help you and you're own your own.

go look at the windows update site. The actuall sp1 patch is less then 3 megs, the security patches are just bundled up with em. You can dl all the security patches with out SP1. Sp1 itself is just a piracy patch.

SP1 should be fine! If you load SP1 and have problems then you already have some other issues on your machine beside PC game issues!!

not true, Go to download.com and do a search for SP1 and read all the comments about it. Its caused huge problems in a ton of peoples comps.

Has anyone considered it may be the CD protection software causing the problem (due to a CD-ROM drive compatiblity issue). Being a beta, they may not have put copy protection violation error messages in there yet. This sounds very similar to problems seen with a specific patch release of Neverwinter Nights and that ended up being a FUBAR change in SecurRom that made the game unstartable for quite a number of legit owners. I myself had to restart the game upwards of 10 times before it would start properly.

The handout certainly states the disk has SafeDisc on it and a lengthy list of CD-ROM drives that have problems with it. On the onther hand.....is this an original Marketing Beta disk or a copy?

Jumping to the conclusion that this is an XP problem is like blaming your engine everytime your car won't start. Sure, it's possible and it should be considered, but changing out the engine is a kind of drastic trouble shooting method....

Just an F.Y.I.

I ran the game fine but it locked up on exit every time until I disabled anti aliasing.

Just thought this might help others having the same problem

I'd like to thank the Academy; but most of all I want to thank Brother Grimm.

Actually, I want to thank everyone.

Though I tried everyones suggestions to no avail, when Brother Grimm mentioned the SafeDisc problem with some CD-ROMs I had a thought - I use GameDrive for some of my games. With it I have partitioned about 10 Virtual CD-ROMs. When I reduced this to one virtual CD-ROM, everything started working again; even my EA games.

So you are all Heroes in my book.

Thanks!

Now I have to get my server up and working.

Dragoro, you're entitled to your opinion, but so am I. Would you like me to start pointing the overwhelming reports from competent computer users, magazines, textbooks, periodicals, newgroups, other computer related forums etc etc etc that would FAR outweight the "tons of people" that you claim to have problems with SP1 to prove my point too? I've read some of those reviews on the CNet site. You have to consider the sources there my friend, seriously. Anyone can claim to be a comp tech...I say prove it.

Although this is a forum, if you read my profile I'm also a bit into computers too. But I have also spent 2 plus years on this forum giving sound technical advice to people FOR FREE. I refuse to sit back and let someone come on here spouting opinions as facts. I have tried desperately to provide a place for people to ask about a problem without having to feel nervous about it. The advice given on this website related to computer troubleshooting doesn't just stem from me, there are many others out here with some darn good technical expertise. I just do my best to ensure it has credence.

If you have something to add on computer related issues, then please, start quoting your source, provide some links...my reputation on this site stands on it's own when it comes to sound computer related advice.

Maybe we should just start over..HI, I'm Stinger...and you are?

<Bows to Mythiasis>. Glad to be of help. Just for the record I've been running a Tech Support Dept. and QA Testing Lab for a PC hardware manufacturer for over 10 years...not bragging, but I've seen more than a few "problems" in the PC area. . I also give out lots of "free" help on boards like this. I rather enjoy helping others (and I find a lot of help myself, BTW).

I have to agree with Stinger on the XP issue. SP1 has made it one of the most stable "consumer" OS around. MS gets a bad rep for lots of stuff that just isn't their fault. Not that they are faultless, but giants make good targets (but throwing mud at them isn't going to hurt them much).

On the AA disable issue: Are you sure you have the latest GeForce drivers installed? While I haven't check this myself (I just got the PR Demo running last night), I've seen others mention they are running FSAA and are not seeing problems.

Heres my source : The head IT director of University of Colorodo, who happens to be one of my close friends. Whether you like it or not, SP1 does cause alot of problems, it is just a piracy patch, and does nothing for security of computer. Just because it has caused no probs on your computer does not mean it doesnt on everyone elses.

Your reputation on this board is that you have a big ego.
