XP Problems with Marketing Beta

Installed the Freelancer Marketing Beta, but it keeps crashing on startup. I get the Freelancer Windows Screen, then after it disappears it loads for a bit then crashes. The Windows Error Reporter says its in the Freelancer.exe, and has a HUGE error log.

Anyone else have this problem?

I have had a similar problem with Ghost Recon and Battlefield 1942; both EA games.

Maybe I need to back some stuff up a restore XP.

The game runs perfect on my computer, no crashes yet. I'm running XP pro. Are you using home or pro?

The game runs beautifully on XP, so my friend, you may want to cure the disease by killing the patient. Backup, format, reinstall, and you should be ok, unless you have a driver issue. If you're using a Radeon 9700 (I do and it looks great), try going to the troubleshooter in your display settings and move the hardware acceleration down one notch.

would that be before SP1 or after?

Stinger
I am now on my backup system, I installed SP1 on my main system and it's setting over there not working, XP SP1 is not a good idea. Reinstall won't fix the problems.. Format will but i need the data so i am waiting for my new hard drive to band-aid the system...

that actually sp1 is just a piracy fix. better off and going to the windows update site and just dling all the patches and ignorin sp1.

How's the visual quality with the 9700 Boscoe? I've heard that they look better than GeForce 3 or 4s in most games, not sure about FL though.

First card I've had where I can max out all settings; ansio, fsaa, truform, and all settings for direct3D and Open GL, as well as any ingame settings, and not lose ANY framerates. Freelancer looks absolutely beautiful.

ATI cards have always had much better color control than nVidia cards. For some reason nVidia colors always seem to be washed out no matter how much you mess with color settings. ATI cards on the other hand somehow have much more vibrant and "alive" color. If ATI would just get a handle on their driver issues they be an unbeatable force. Unfortuantely, even through the 9700 is a superior card, people are still avoiding it because the ATI drivers still have compatibility issues with a lot of games out there.

Anyway back to color, it's interesting that you can notice this on game consoles. One of my friends with more free time and money than God has both an XBox (which uses an nVidia chip of course) and a GameCube (which uses an ATI video card). He also has the game Turok: Evolution (terrible game, good graphics) for both. Even though the XBox version has sharper textures than the GC version, the colors are so much richer on the GC that it comes out looking just as good (if not better) in the end.

I have had a few issues where I'll get kicked from the system in a few of the Sigma sectors (13 & 17). Happens when I either land, save, or take off.

Also had a currency issue as well. A certain weapon that was found became damaged and the repair costs were around 600,000,000. Well I ended up selling it and I received 999,999,999. My total net worth is 1001,607,566.

Never agreed to finding the Root Cause to the solution by reinstalling your OS. There are pleanty of tools listed on the web pertaining to crash dumps. Could be the physical type of memory... This is beta and DA stated they were making some additional tests. Hopefully, this will clear up the issues found.

Bogie, those kinds of bugs are known and are fixed.

Windows XP SP1 is a perfectly fine patch for XP, in infact made the 1st version of XP much much more stable.

Of course, never forget updates from the update site either...

Regarding the crashing... it won't be XP, the OS always gets the blame first, trust me, being a technician I know I do ... more than likely you've got an issue with some of your hardware and/or it's associated drivers, or some software installed such as those running in the background eg. Internet Blockers, RAM Clearers, Virus Checkers... etc... try removing or disabling things one by one until things work.... and update ALL drivers for hardware that your can.

If this don't work... update old software to newer versions. If all else fails, try a reinstall after backing up... and install the basic drivers... testing from the ground up loading your games until you find the prob.

But try the first idea... from up to ground

Good luck.
