I think it would very cool if you could play in teams of two people.
One gunner and one pilot.
Maybe flying a gun boat so that the gunner could have a 360 degree firing arc and the pilot could just do his/her thing.

Remember the movie 'The Last Starfighter'?. Kinda like that.

IL-2 sturmovik has something like that, but unless the coop server is full, I rarely see anybody jumping for the gunner seats first chance we get...as it's a very boring job.

Yes I would have to agree. I think it would be boring just to sit in the gunner seat and wait to until you finally find something to shoot at and that is also if you find something to shoot at all.

the gunners seat can be kind of annoying, plus it would change the whole game structure, how would the gunner be involved in buying parts and getting jobs, i think it would completely change the game in order for such an option to be feasible

Um....there is something like this, its called Turret View.

You and a large number of people can go in formation with 1 guy who you choose to be the pilot and that guy will steer his and everybody else's ship while the rest of you can go into Turret View and have a complete 360 degree shooting arc.

Thats one of the features I really look forward to in FL.
Is there a maximum number of ships in formation flight ?

There is propably a max, but we haven't seen it yet!
