3d Space

will space be really 3d for example will i have to vertically as well as horizontally to get places or are all the bases and planets along a "plain" is space?

All are on the same plane but there are cases where some planets or bases will be slightly lower or higher.

I think he means is it like Earth&Beyong were you only steer the ship horizontally. If thats his question than the answer is no. Space is 3d and you control the ship both horizontally and vertically.

Imagine how our solar system and galaxies are layed out - Flat discs, I assume the same is with FL.

Yeah... i think it wouldn't be wise to place huge bases outside the gravitational plane. Then again iam no astrophysicist.

Your right Falmarin. Galaxies and solar systems are flat.but they are clustered in groups which are not on a single flat plain.

it always annoys me that no planets are "up" from each other because space is 3d the galaxy is only relativly flat not perfectly

Galaxies are flat, relative to their width, but they are very much "thick" so systems themselves won't be on a plane. But planets and other bodies tend to orbit in one plane, and it doesn't make much sense to put artificial structures out of this plane (saves fuel and is more convenient). The sector map is flat, but the systems could very well be up and down on the galactic Z axis. It really isn't taken into account though.

Speaking of 3D space, has anyone ever gone so far down or up that they exploded or something? Or does the space just keep coming? I tried it once, but I got bored so I turned around.

i hit my cruise engine and went far far away.. eventually there were so many hostiles that i didn't make it... but that was in manhattan and i only had a patriot, yet to try it in a eagle

There is one star at least not on the plane with the rest of the system. Tau-37 has 2 stars and the medium yellow is like 10k up from where the bulk of the objects are. You can also fly into and touch it without taking damage. Same with the blue Dwarf but you start burning up once you hit it. Or at least that what it did for me when I tried it 3 times in a row.

From another thread, I asked:

Speaking of flying out past the map...
Has anyone noticed how dang TWO-DIMENSIONAL FL space is?
Ya, I know our solar system is in a plane mostly, but this is SPACE!

Just once something up or down would be nice. Has anyone flown UP or
DOWN just to see what happens? I plan on it soon, but anyone try it?
This may be difficult seeing there's nothing to fly to, but I can see
coming down onto a target in a radioactive cloud from above, eh?

Well I tried it last night. Used the Cortez system, it's perfect for it.
I targeted the Curacao Docking Ring and went straight up. Mostly. A few
course corrections and eventually the Nav Map showed my 300m/s ship stationary.

After 200k, I stopped. Looking down, all I could see is the planet, sun,
and the two Ice Clouds. Could not see Corcovado ice field. Turned off all
background stuff. Nav Map showed me sitting 2k away from docking ring.

Probably no need to go higher than 100k (HUD=Far) to drop in from above
onto any point in any system. Useful for things like radioactive clouds,
since they're not very thick. Don't know how well this would work to avoid
Hostiles, they would have a long time to notice you. Certainly can get from 1
end of a system to the other, gate 2 gate with minimum hassle but max time.

Not all galaxies are flat disks. There are no end of shapes and sizes. Spiral galaxies seem to be a popular theme however.

A side note, has anyone noticed what looks like the Pleiades in the background of one of the Tau systems?

If planetary motion were implemented in one of these games (not to mention realistic scale), having stations directly above and below a star would be beneficial. That way, you could create trade lanes that could follow a planet through its orbit without changing length (as much).

Otherwise, the lanes would be changing length like a slinky on crack!

a slinky on crack. wow. ive never really thought about that. even when im drunk...
