Freelancer control scheme

I read on a post in another forum that the combat system in Freelancer will be point and click, in other words it will not be real time combat like most space sims. Is that true? I am sure that you will control the ship and combat and not just be point and click.

Can someone give me the low down on the control system for Freelancer? Thanks.

This the only thing I could find about controlls.....

"How are the controls like?
Most of the game is mouse driven, using the WASD keys for controlling speed and slideing left/right. You can think of the controls for Freelancer much like the controls for Freespace 2 where you use both your keyboard and mouse. Selecting things on the HUD such as weapons and throttle is done with the left mouse button, while firing is done with the right mouse button. Optional hotkeys will also be available for your disposal for the keyboard."

While informative it doesn't totaly answer my question. Using the mouse could still mean point and click. Like in Tachyon I used the mouse because I did not have a joy stick at the time and it was not point and click, you could direct the aiminq reticule and steer the ship. By point and click I guess I am talking about something more like a RTS game.

It would seem to me that being able to steer and control your ship real time is how it will be. I think the other person is just full of crap.

One more question, in MechWarrior 4 you could setup your weapons to shoot in any combo of groups you want, all lasers and one missle, 2 lasers and 2 missles etc. etc. will it be possible to do this or will you only be able to shoot one weapon at a time and just toggle between then when you want to change?

Concerning the mouse: you can either hold down the left mouse button or select continuous mouse flight without having to hold the button by pressing the space bar once. In both cases you drag/move the pointer to some point on the screen and your ship will try to allign itself to that spot. In other words: the farther you move the pointer from the center of the screen the harder is the turn of your ship into the given direction. A click on the right mouse button fires the weapons. It pretty much resembles Joystick flight with one difference: your crosshair isn't fixed to the center of the screen because your weapons are on moveable turrets.

I think i got it right, if not... well.

As long as you can still get into exciting dog fights then I'm OK.

Welcome to the forums Cypher!

There is a really good interview with giving a top notch description of the control system here.
It is on the second page from memory.

Nice article. Thanks for the link and maybe someone should point some of those still fighting the Joystick Jihad in that direction....
