Asteroid fields?

Quick question to the beta testers:
Are WingCommander 1&2/Privateer-esque asteroid fields in the game?

Taking on a group of enemies in a asteroid field was, in my humble opinion, just about the most intense experience in Privateer. You not only had to aim at your enemies, but also had to dodge a constant hail of asteroids. Using the afterburner, which would quickly get you out of most tight spots normally, became an uncalculable risk. Of course, your opponents also had the same problem.

Sadly, in all the Space Sims I've played after Privateer, asteroid fields, if there were any, were hardly dangerous, and it was damn near impossible to accidently crash into a 'roid.

So, does FL continue this sad tradition? Or will the old asteroids be back?

If you look at some of the screenshots, you can see the asteroid fields are pretty dense ..so are the mine fields , I dont know if you get damaged if you fly into an asteroid.

Asteroids in FL are sort of in between. They're dense like the Privateer ones but they don't kill you if you hit them. They do inflict a lot of damage if you hit one with your shields down. They used to have it so that you died if you rammed asteroids but it became to where nobody went inside asteroid fields because they would constantly die

In the early stages of development in the game basically you would die if you hit into an asteroird, but they knew that the game would get pretty tiresome so they took it out since most battles seem to take place in asteroid fields.

that sounds like a great balance, they do hurt your shields if ya hit em though right?

Big ones maybe do a little bit. Sometimes if you are in formation with someone or using GoTo you will hit an asteroid, bounce off of it right into another one, and keep going like a pingpong ball until you can straighten it out Good reason not to trust your NN too much while flying in particle fields! If you have weaker shields you may in fact take a lot of shield damage, but one collision won't do too much I think.

It all depends on how strong your shields are, dont play pinball with a starflier

So they can destroy your ship but only on weak sheilded ships and the stronger ones just bounce on for awhile longer?

You will take severe damage if you collide into something without shields, no matter how strong your ship is I think. I'll experiment at one point, sell my shields then go crash into something. The faster you're going the more damage it does as well.

One of the tactics my son would use in Privateer was to use the Orion ship and ram his ememies! It was slow, but had strong shields and armor. Some of the missions in Privateer required you to dogfight in asteriod fields and really tested your abiltity with the joystick! I think that was a good addition to the game, even if it was a very hard part. But it made it more realistic than what you did in Wing Commander Prophecy. After all...a asteriod is a big solid rock flying thru space. Just look at what it can do to the earth when they hit!

Yah, but an asteroid hitting Earth is different that an asteroid hitting a ship. The proportions of momentum is different. Anyways, some asteroid fields are a lot more dense than others. The lighting in the asteroid fields also can affect you cuz some are REALLY dark like those dark blue nebula/asteroid fields. Also, there are those smaller minable rocks which run into ur ship too. If you dont have GoTo on, they can alter your course quite a bit.

Well first off only a comet can move at high speeds through space because of the gravitional pull of planets/stars and staillites (The moon for ex). They grab and astroied and swing it fast through space inessence creating a comet. Astriods hardly move in space which is why when a group of them stay in one spot for a long period it is called a feild/belt. Comets which I think your talking about are astriods moving at high speeds alone in space.

So the question should be, will there be comets that can destroy your ship?

Post Tue Feb 11, 2003 4:07 pm

No. Asteroids aren't moving that fast in the FL universe so their speed relative to you isn't relevant.

I wonder if the safe speed to go through an Asteroid Field would still be 250kps

Nothing in Freelancer is that fast everything is measured in metres per sec.

All craft have a maximum velocity of 79 mps with normal engines & the max w/ cruise engine being 300.
