Personally I found the "Bargib's Barbie Makeover" worked much better when I remapped everything to the joystick.

Gibby said it perfectly, once you start playing and get into the game, you won't even notice what controls you are using, you'll be much too busy worrying about the next wave of Outcasts firing missiles at you.
