how big are the systems?

I remember the first time i ever played wing commander, didn't know that there was an autopilot that took you to the next nav point, took me about 20 minutes flying manually to the next nav point without anything ever happening. And that was just a short distance, so I can't imagine flying between star-systems manually. You can always try if you're a very lonely person who has no social life that has nothing better to do if you like spending a 12 hour fligt to the next system...

No, within the FL universe it is easily possible for ships to fly from system to system manually (a la the colony ships) also the colonies were exploring nearby systems befoer jump gate technology was developed... I BELIEVE. It simply makes it so that you can go across the sector in a matter of days or weeks rather than months or years.
